Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Uniform

The abandoned building felt colder than before.

Nathaniel stood frozen.

The screen was black.

Marcus Reed was gone.

Emily was gone.

Ruby was gone.

Everything important in his life was somewhere else.

And for the first time in his career, Nathaniel Graves had no plan.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“You believe him.””

Nathaniel didn’t answer.

“That hurts, doesn’t it?””

Nathaniel looked up.

“What?””

“Realizing the people closest to you lied.””

Nathaniel’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t pretend you care.””

Daniel nodded.

“I don’t.””

At least the honesty was clear.

Nathaniel looked at the letter again.

Emily’s words.

Daniel’s words.

Marcus’s confession.

Pieces of a puzzle that didn’t fit.

“Where is Ruby?””

Daniel sighed.

“You still only care about that.””

“She is my daughter.””

Daniel studied him.

“That’s new for you.””

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about being a father.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Maybe not.””

A pause.

“But I know what it feels like to have something taken away.””

Nathaniel stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, the man looked less like a villain.

More like someone carrying a wound.

Then the moment disappeared.

“You need to get out.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“What?””

Daniel pointed toward the exit.

“Marcus doesn’t need me anymore.””

Nathaniel didn’t move.

“Why are you helping me?””

“I’m not.””

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Because if Marcus gets what he wants, nobody survives.””

A sound came from Nathaniel’s phone.

A secure military alert.

He answered.

“Graves.””

An officer’s voice came through.

“General, we recovered part of Marcus Reed’s files.””

Nathaniel listened.

“What did you find?””

Silence.

Then:

“Sir, the files include a list of names.””

Nathaniel’s grip tightened.

“What names?””

The officer hesitated.

“Children.””

Nathaniel looked at Daniel.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“How many?””

“Twenty-seven.””

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

“Send me the list.””

The officer paused.

“Sir…”

“What?””

“The first name on the list.””

Nathaniel waited.

The officer’s voice became quiet.

“Ruby Carter.””

Everything stopped.

Daniel watched his reaction.

Nathaniel felt anger rise.

Not the controlled anger of a commander.

Something deeper.

Something personal.

“What is this program?””

Daniel answered softly.

“The question you should be asking is…”

He stepped closer.

“Why was Ruby the only one who survived?””

Nathaniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the old letter.

“Emily never told you everything.””

Nathaniel’s voice lowered.

“What else?””

Daniel looked toward the rain outside.

“When Ruby was born, there was another child.””

Nathaniel felt his heartbeat slow.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Nathaniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ask Emily.””

The words followed him like a shadow.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another piece of his life hidden away.

Nathaniel’s phone rang again.

This time, it was Emily.

He answered immediately.

“Emily.””

Her voice was shaking.

“Nathaniel…”

“Where is Ruby?””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s safe.””

He exhaled.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

Then Emily whispered:

“I need to tell you the truth before Marcus does.””

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

“Tell me.””

Her voice broke.

“Ruby had a twin sister.””

The world seemed to stop.

Nathaniel couldn’t speak.

Emily continued.

“And Marcus took her.””

The call went silent.

Then one final sentence came through.

“The daughter we thought we lost…”

May you like

A shaky breath.

“She’s alive.””
