Chapter 7: The Letter That Changed Everything
Nathaniel Graves had faced enemy fire.
He had walked into war zones.
He had made decisions where thousands of lives depended on his next command.
But nothing prepared him for a single envelope.
A simple piece of paper.
A letter written twenty years ago.
A letter that could destroy everything he believed.
Daniel Vale held it between two fingers.
“You spent years blaming Emily.””
Nathaniel’s eyes stayed locked on the envelope.
“She disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“She left me.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Did she?””
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Give me the letter.””
Daniel moved it away.
“Not yet.””
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.
“You brought me here for a reason.””
“I did.””
“Then stop playing games.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Emily was never running from you.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Nathaniel remembered the last day he saw her.
Emily standing outside his apartment.
Her eyes full of fear.
Her hands shaking.
He remembered asking what was wrong.
He remembered her saying:
“I need time.””
Then she was gone.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
No answer.
Nathaniel had spent twenty years believing she chose to leave.
Daniel looked at him.
“She was protecting you.””
Nathaniel shook his head.
“From what?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, a sound came from outside.
A vehicle.
Nathaniel immediately turned.
“You brought someone else.””
Daniel smiled.
“I never said I came alone.””
The door behind Nathaniel opened.
Several armed men entered.
Not military.
Private security.
Nathaniel counted quickly.
Six.
Maybe seven.
Daniel watched his reaction.
“You see? This is why I respected you.””
Nathaniel stared.
“You respected me?””
“You always noticed details.””
Daniel walked closer.
“But you missed the biggest one.””
“What?””
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
“Emily never stopped loving you.””
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
The moment distracted him.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
And smiled.
“That still matters to you.””
Nathaniel ignored the comment.
“Where is my daughter?””
Daniel looked toward the envelope.
“Everything you want is inside.””
Nathaniel reached out.
Daniel finally handed it over.
Nathaniel opened it carefully.
The paper was old.
The handwriting familiar.
His hands trembled as he read.
*Nathaniel,*
*If you are reading this, then something went wrong.*
His breathing stopped.
He continued.
*I wanted to tell you the truth. I wanted to come back. But Daniel found out about our daughter, and he knew exactly how to hurt us.*
Nathaniel swallowed.
*He told me he would destroy your career. He would make everyone believe you were involved in his operation. He said you would lose everything.*
Nathaniel’s eyes moved faster.
*But there is something else you need to know.*
A pause.
Then the sentence that made his blood run cold.
*Ruby was not the only thing Daniel was hiding from us.*
Nathaniel looked up.
Daniel was watching him.
“You knew.””
Daniel said nothing.
Nathaniel returned to the letter.
**Before Ruby was born, Daniel was involved in an operation that used innocent people as leverage. I discovered records showing he had access to classified family information. Names.
Locations. Children.**
Nathaniel’s face hardened.
*He wasn’t just threatening us. He was collecting information.*
Nathaniel looked at Daniel.
“What did you do?””
Daniel smiled.
The letter continued.
*Nathaniel, if you ever find Ruby, you need to know this: Daniel will not stop because he wants revenge. He stops only when he gets what he wants.*
Nathaniel lowered the paper.
“What does he want?””
Daniel finally answered.
“Your trust.””
Nathaniel stared.
“What?””
Daniel walked closer.
“You spent twenty years believing I destroyed your life.””
“You did.””
“Maybe.””
The answer was unsettling.
Daniel continued.
“But the real question is why people believed me.””
Nathaniel felt a cold feeling in his chest.
Because Daniel wasn’t talking like a guilty man.
He was talking like someone who still had control.
Suddenly, Nathaniel’s phone vibrated.
A message.
From headquarters.
He checked it.
His face changed.
Emily had sent only three words.
*Don’t trust him.*
Nathaniel looked back at Daniel.
“You expected her to warn me.””
Daniel smiled.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she always chooses you.””
A pause.
“Even when she shouldn’t.””
Then Daniel looked toward the doorway.
“And now she has to choose again.””
Nathaniel followed his gaze.
A screen turned on.
A live video appeared.
Emily.
At headquarters.
And behind her…
a man holding a weapon.
Nathaniel’s blood went cold.
Because the man behind Emily was not Daniel’s guard.
It was someone he knew.
May you like
Someone he trusted.
Colonel Marcus Reed.
