Chapter 11: The Girl Who Knew Their Secret
The medical facility looked abandoned from the outside.
No signs.
No security cameras.
No indication that anything important had ever happened there.
But Nathaniel knew better.
The most dangerous secrets were rarely hidden in obvious places.
They were hidden behind ordinary doors.
He stood with Emily and Ruby outside the entrance.
Ruby held his hand.
A small gesture.
But one Nathaniel felt more than any medal he had ever received.
“You ready?”” he asked.
Ruby nodded.
“Are we finding Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Does she know us?””
Nathaniel looked at Emily.
Neither of them had an answer.
They walked inside.
The lobby was empty.
Dust covered the desk.
Old paperwork sat untouched.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“You took long enough.””
Everyone stopped.
A girl stepped into view.
Nathaniel forgot how to breathe.
She was around eight years old.
Same age as Ruby.
Same eyes.
Same face shape.
Different expression.
Ruby stared.
The girl stared back.
Neither spoke.
Then Ruby whispered:
“Mom?””
Emily covered her mouth.
Because there was no doubt.
This was Lily.
Her daughter.
Alive.
Standing in front of her.
Nathaniel took one slow step forward.
“Lily.””
The girl’s eyes moved to him.
“You’re Nathaniel Graves.””
His heart stopped.
She knew his name.
“You know who I am?””
Lily gave a small, bitter smile.
“I know everything.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Lily…”
The girl looked at her.
For a second, anger crossed her face.
Then pain.
“You came back.””
Emily started crying.
“I never stopped looking.””
Lily laughed quietly.
“But you never found me.””
The words were not cruel.
They were honest.
Nathaniel felt them.
Because they were true.
Eight years old.
And already carrying abandonment.
Ruby stepped forward.
“Hi.””
Lily looked at her.
They stared at each other.
“I’m Ruby.””
“I know.””
Ruby tilted her head.
“How?””
Lily pointed toward a folder on the table.
“Because I found your file.””
Nathaniel immediately became alert.
“Who gave you access?””
Lily looked at him.
“No one.””
“Then how?””
The girl looked away.
“Because Marcus taught me.””
Emily went pale.
“What?””
Lily’s voice became quieter.
“He raised me.””
The room froze.
Nathaniel felt anger explode.
“Marcus Reed?””
Lily nodded.
“He told me you were dangerous.””
Emily looked horrified.
“What did he tell you?””
“That my real parents abandoned me.””
Nathaniel looked at Lily.
A child who had spent years believing she was unwanted.
A child who had been manipulated.
Lily looked at him.
“Was he lying?””
Nathaniel knelt.
Not as a general.
Not as a commander.
Just as a father.
“Yes.””
Lily studied him.
“How do I know?””
Nathaniel looked at Ruby.
Then back at her.
“Because your sister is standing right there.””
Lily looked at Ruby.
Ruby slowly stepped closer.
“I didn’t know about you.””
Lily looked down.
“I know.””
Ruby frowned.
“How?””
“Because I read Mom’s old letters.””
Emily froze.
“What letters?””
Lily looked at her.
“The ones Marcus kept.””
Nathaniel stood.
“Where are they?””
Lily pointed deeper into the facility.
“Inside.””
They followed her through the building.
In a locked room, they found boxes.
Hundreds of pages.
Records.
Photographs.
Evidence.
Emily picked up a letter.
Her hands shook.
“Marcus kept everything.””
Nathaniel opened a file.
Inside were documents about the program.
The children.
The surveillance.
But then he found something else.
A document with his own name.
He read it.
And his face changed.
Emily noticed.
“What?””
Nathaniel handed it over.
She read.
Then whispered:
“No.””
Ruby looked between them.
“What does it say?””
Nathaniel answered slowly.
“It says the program wasn’t created by Daniel.””
A pause.
“It was created by someone above him.””
Emily looked at the signature.
The room became silent.
Because the name at the bottom belonged to someone neither of them expected.
May you like
Someone Nathaniel had trusted.
Someone who had been dead for years.
