Chapter 10: The Daughter Hidden in the Shadows

Nathaniel Graves couldn’t move.

The phone was still pressed against his ear.

But he heard nothing.

Not the rain outside the abandoned building.

Not Daniel’s footsteps.

Not the distant sound of military vehicles approaching.

Only one sentence repeated in his mind.

*Ruby had a twin sister.*

For twenty years, he had believed he lost everything.

Now he discovered he had not lost one child.

He had lost two.

“Emily.””

His voice barely worked.

“Say it again.””

On the other end of the line, he heard her breathing.

“I should have told you.””

“No.””

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“Say it again.””

A long silence.

Then:

“Ruby had a sister.””

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

“What was her name?””

Emily hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than the truth.

“Lily.””

The name settled into his chest.

Lily.

A child who existed.

A daughter he never knew.

A daughter someone had taken.

“Where is she?””

Emily’s voice cracked.

“I don’t know.””

The answer almost broke him.

“You don’t know?””

“I spent years looking.””

“And you never told me?””

“Nathaniel—”

“No.””

His voice rose.

“Twenty years, Emily.””

Daniel stood nearby, watching silently.

Nathaniel turned away.

“You let me believe I had nothing.””

“I was trying to protect Ruby.””

“And Lily?””

Emily went quiet.

That silence answered enough.

Nathaniel felt anger rise.

But underneath it was something worse.

Pain.

Because anger meant there was still something to fight.

Pain meant he was mourning a life he never had.

A voice came through the phone.

“Dad?””

Nathaniel froze.

Ruby.

Emily must have put her on speaker.

“Dad?””

The word sounded unfamiliar.

Beautiful.

Terrifying.

Nathaniel looked down.

He had waited his entire life to hear someone call him that.

But now, at the same time, he was hearing about the daughter who never got the chance.

“Ruby.””

His voice softened.

“Are you okay?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Is Lily my sister?””

Nathaniel couldn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know how to explain a tragedy to an eight-year-old.

“Yes,” Emily said quietly.

Ruby was silent.

Then:

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question was not angry.

That made it worse.

Emily cried softly.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

Ruby looked confused.

“But you already lost someone.””

No one spoke.

Because she was right.

Hours later, Nathaniel returned to headquarters.

The building looked different.

The same walls.

The same officers.

The same security systems.

But now every hallway felt like a place where secrets had been buried.

Emily sat in a conference room with Ruby beside her.

The moment Nathaniel entered, Ruby looked up.

“Did you find Lily?””

Nathaniel swallowed.

“Not yet.””

Ruby looked disappointed.

“But you will.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was a belief.

A child’s simple belief that her father could fix things.

Nathaniel sat across from them.

“I’m going to try.””

Ruby nodded.

Then she looked at Emily.

“Mom knew about her all this time?””

Emily lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Did Lily know about me?””

Emily’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Ruby looked down.

Nathaniel noticed the sadness in her expression.

For the first time, he understood something.

Ruby wasn’t angry because she had a sister.

She was hurt because someone had taken away a connection she deserved to have.

A connection to her own family.

An officer entered holding a folder.

“General.””

Nathaniel stood.

“What?””

“We recovered more files from Marcus Reed’s system.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Names.

Reports.

Nathaniel looked through them.

Children.

Families.

Dates.

Then he saw it.

A photograph.

Two newborn babies.

One with a small mark on her wrist.

One with a tiny birth bracelet.

His hands shook.

Ruby saw his face.

“What is it?””

Nathaniel couldn’t answer.

Emily stood slowly.

“What did you find?””

He handed her the photograph.

Emily covered her mouth.

Because she recognized it.

The two babies.

Her daughters.

The officer spoke quietly.

“Sir, we found a location connected to the second child.””

Nathaniel looked up.

“Where?””

The officer hesitated.

“A private medical facility.””

“Where?””

The officer placed another document on the table.

Nathaniel read the address.

Then his eyes widened.

Because it wasn’t overseas.

It wasn’t hidden in another country.

It was twenty miles away.

In Virginia.

A place that had existed the entire time.

A place where Lily had been living.

The officer continued.

“Sir, there’s one more thing.””

Nathaniel looked up.

“What?””

“The records show someone has accessed Lily’s file recently.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“Who?””

The officer answered:

“Ruby’s twin sister.””

Silence.

Nathaniel stared.

“She accessed her own file?””

“Yes.””

Ruby looked confused.

“But how?””

No one answered.

Because everyone understood the impossible truth.

Lily wasn’t missing.

She had found them first.
