Chapter 5: The Photograph

Nobody spoke.

The photograph remained on the screen.

Ruby standing beside the bus stop.

Holding the wallet.

Rain falling around her.

A moment that should have been ordinary.

A moment that should have belonged only to her.

But someone had been there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Nathaniel felt his hands tighten into fists.

“Find him.””

The room moved instantly.

Officers rushed to their stations.

Computers opened.

Phones rang.

But Nathaniel barely heard any of it.

His eyes stayed on the photograph.

Someone had followed his daughter.

His daughter.

The word still felt strange.

Impossible.

And yet it was true.

Emily entered the command room moments later.

She saw the screen.

Her face went pale.

“No.””

Nathaniel turned.

“You knew this could happen.””

Emily shook her head.

“I knew Daniel would come back someday.””

“But you didn’t tell me.””

“I was trying to keep him away from Ruby.””

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“By hiding her from me?””

Emily’s eyes filled with frustration.

“By keeping her alive.””

The room became quiet.

Nathaniel wanted to argue.

He wanted to say she was wrong.

But he couldn’t.

Because the photograph proved one thing.

Emily had spent years afraid for a reason.

Ruby entered behind her mother.

“Who took that picture?””

Neither adult answered.

Ruby looked at Nathaniel.

“Was it him?””

Nathaniel crouched beside her.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He struggled to find the right words.

“Because some people hurt others when they want something.””

Ruby frowned.

“What does he want?””

Nathaniel looked at Emily.

That was the question.

The one they had avoided.

Emily slowly sat down.

“Daniel wants the evidence.””

Nathaniel’s expression changed.

“What evidence?””

Emily looked at him.

“The evidence that could destroy him.””

Twenty years disappeared in that moment.

Nathaniel remembered everything.

The accusations.

The investigation.

The reason his career nearly ended.

Daniel had framed him.

But why?

Emily continued.

“Daniel was selling military information.””

Nathaniel went still.

“What?””

“He was moving secrets outside the country.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I saw the files.””

Nathaniel stared.

“And you were going to expose him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because before I could, he found out I was pregnant.””

Nathaniel stopped.

“He knew?””

Emily nodded.

“He said if I went to anyone, he would make sure our child disappeared.””

Nathaniel looked at Ruby.

The anger inside him was almost unbearable.

“He threatened a baby?””

Emily whispered:

“He threatened you too.””

Nathaniel looked back.

“Me?””

“He told me if I contacted you, he would make sure you took the blame for everything.””

The pieces began falling together.

The missing evidence.

The betrayal.

The career destroyed.

Daniel hadn’t just hidden from him.

He had controlled everything.

A young officer approached.

“General.””

Nathaniel turned.

“We found something.””

The officer placed a file on the table.

“Colonel Marcus Reed’s account shows unusual activity.””

Nathaniel opened it.

Payments.

Messages.

Secret meetings.

His expression hardened.

“Reed helped him.””

Emily looked at the papers.

“Who is Marcus Reed?””

Nathaniel’s voice became cold.

“The man who stood beside me while my life fell apart.””

The officer hesitated.

“There’s more.””

Nathaniel looked up.

“What?””

“We found a location.””

Everyone waited.

“Daniel Vale’s signal came from an abandoned property outside Richmond.””

Nathaniel grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going.””

Emily stood.

“No.””

He stopped.

“Why?””

“Because that’s what Daniel wants.””

Nathaniel turned.

“He threatened our daughter.””

“And that’s why you can’t rush.””

The words surprised him.

Emily stepped closer.

“For twenty years, Daniel has been planning.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He wants you angry.””

Nathaniel was silent.

Because she was right.

Then Ruby spoke.

“Maybe he wants you to forget something.””

Everyone looked at her.

Nathaniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Ruby pointed at the photograph.

“He took a picture of me returning your wallet.””

She looked at the screen.

“But he didn’t take one of my mom.””

A pause.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Ruby continued.

“Maybe he wanted you to find me.””

Nathaniel stared at the child.

Emily’s face changed.

Because she realized the same thing.

Daniel hadn’t accidentally discovered Ruby.

He had led them here.

The abandoned property.

The photograph.

The message.

It was all a trap.

Suddenly, every screen in the command room went black.

A final message appeared.

This time there was no warning.

No threat.

Only an address.

And four words.

*COME ALONE, NATHANIEL.*

May you like

Then beneath it:

*OR LOSE YOUR DAUGHTER.*
