Chapter 6: The Choice He Never Expected

Nathaniel stared at the message.

Nobody in the room moved.

The command center, usually filled with voices and activity, felt frozen.

Four words kept repeating in his mind.

Lose your daughter.

He had spent twenty years believing he lost Emily.

Now, after only a few hours, he had discovered he had a daughter.

And someone was threatening to take her away.

Again.

“Sir,” an officer said carefully, “we should not engage alone.””

Nathaniel didn’t respond.

He knew the protocol.

He knew the risks.

He also knew Daniel.

Men like Daniel Vale didn’t make simple threats.

They created choices where every option caused pain.

Emily stepped beside him.

“You can’t go.””

Nathaniel looked at her.

“You said yourself he wants me angry.””

“Yes.””

“He also wants me afraid.””

Emily nodded.

“Exactly.””

Nathaniel looked at Ruby.

She was sitting quietly, holding the cup of hot chocolate from earlier.

Too quiet.

A child should not understand negotiations.

Should not understand threats.

Should not know what it feels like when adults are terrified.

He walked over.

“Ruby.””

She looked up.

“Are you leaving?””

He hesitated.

“I might need to.””

Her face fell.

“Because of him?””

“Yes.””

Ruby looked down.

Then she asked:

“If you go, will you come back?””

The question stopped him.

Because she wasn’t asking as a soldier.

She wasn’t asking as a general.

She was asking as a daughter.

Nathaniel knelt.

“I promise I will do everything I can.””

Ruby studied him.

“That’s not the same as yes.””

Nobody in the room spoke.

Nathaniel realized something.

For twenty years, he had given orders.

People followed.

People trusted him.

But this little girl didn’t need a general.

She needed honesty.

“I will come back.””

Ruby nodded.

“Okay.””

Emily watched them.

And for the first time that night, something softened in her expression.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something close.

The abandoned property sat outside Richmond, hidden behind overgrown trees and broken fences.

Nathaniel arrived alone.

Exactly as the message demanded.

Rain fell lightly.

The old building looked empty.

But Nathaniel knew better.

A man like Daniel never truly disappeared.

He stepped inside.

“Daniel.””

His voice echoed.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then applause came from the darkness.

Slow.

Mocking.

A man stepped forward.

Older than Nathaniel remembered.

But the same cold eyes.

Daniel Vale smiled.

“Twenty years.””

Nathaniel stared at him.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel laughed.

“That’s your first sentence?””

“You ruined my life.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“No.””

He walked closer.

“You ruined your own life by trusting people.””

Nathaniel’s expression hardened.

“Where is my daughter?””

Daniel smiled.

“There he is.””

“What?””

“The old Nathaniel.””

Daniel circled him.

“The man who always thinks he can save everyone.””

Nathaniel didn’t move.

“You involved Marcus Reed.””

“Smart man.””

“You threatened Emily.””

“She was difficult.””

“You watched Ruby.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared slightly.

“She was unexpected.””

Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at him.

“You were supposed to find Emily.””

A pause.

“Not Ruby.””

Nathaniel felt a chill.

“Why?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

Nathaniel recognized it immediately.

His heart stopped.

Because the handwriting on the front belonged to Emily.

A letter.

From twenty years ago.

A letter he had never received.

Daniel held it out.

“You always wondered why she left.””

Nathaniel stared.

“Give me that.””

Daniel smiled.

“First, you need to know something.””

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter?””

Daniel looked toward the dark hallway.

Then back at him.

“She’s not the only child involved.””

Nathaniel froze.

“What?””

Daniel opened the envelope slightly.

“Emily didn’t disappear because she was afraid of me.””

A pause.

“She disappeared because she found out the truth about you.””

Nathaniel’s face changed.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask her what happened the night Ruby was born.””

Nathaniel felt the world shift.

Because for the first time in twenty years…

he wondered if the story he had believed was never the truth.

And back at headquarters, Emily Carter received a message on her phone.

One sentence.

May you like

One name.

*He knows about the second secret.*
