Chapter 3: The Secret Emily Buried

Emily Carter looked like she had been struck.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The military headquarters remained silent except for the sound of rain hitting the tall glass windows.

Ruby looked from her mother to General Graves.

She didn’t understand the name.

But she understood fear.

And her mother was afraid.

“Mom?””

Emily immediately forced a smile.

“Ruby, sweetheart, everything is okay.””

But Ruby knew when her mother was pretending.

Emily always smiled when she was worried.

It was the smile she used when the electricity was about to be shut off.

The smile she used when she skipped dinner so Ruby could eat.

The smile that meant something was wrong.

Nathaniel held the folder tightly.

“Emily.””

She looked at him.

“Not here.””

His jaw tightened.

“Not here?””

“Please.””

“For twenty years, I searched for answers.””

Emily looked around at the officers watching them.

Then at Ruby.

“Not in front of her.””

Nathaniel followed her eyes.

His anger softened.

Because Ruby was still just a child.

A child who had walked into a military headquarters because she believed returning a wallet mattered.

He nodded once.

“Private room.””

Minutes later, Ruby sat in a conference room with a cup of hot chocolate an officer had brought her.

She held the cup with both hands.

Across the table, her mother sat beside her.

Nathaniel stood near the window.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Ruby broke the silence.

“Who is Daniel Vale?””

Emily closed her eyes.

Nathaniel looked at her.

“You owe her the truth.””

Emily whispered:

“I know.””

Ruby waited.

Her mother reached across the table and held her hand.

“Daniel Vale was someone from my past.””

“Someone bad?””

Emily didn’t answer.

Nathaniel did.

“He was dangerous.””

Emily looked at him sharply.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Make yourself the hero.””

The room went still.

Ruby stared.

She had never heard anyone talk to General Graves that way.

Nathaniel’s face tightened.

“I lost everything because of what happened.””

Emily’s voice became quiet.

“And I lost everything too.””

Ruby looked between them.

“What happened?””

Neither answered.

Finally, Nathaniel sat down.

“When I was younger, I trusted the wrong people.””

Emily looked at the folder.

“Daniel was one of them.””

“What did he do?”” Ruby asked.

Nathaniel hesitated.

“He was involved in classified military operations.””

Emily interrupted.

“And when I found out what he was doing, I tried to expose him.””

Nathaniel looked at her.

“You disappeared.””

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

The words changed the room.

Ruby squeezed her mother’s hand.

“He threatened you?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“He told me that if I spoke, people I loved would suffer.””

Nathaniel’s expression shifted.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Emily laughed softly, but there was no happiness in it.

“Because Daniel showed me proof that you were being watched.””

“I could have protected you.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You couldn’t.””

The general looked away.

For the first time, Ruby saw something unexpected.

Not anger.

Pain.

Emily touched Ruby’s hair.

“I left because I had to keep you safe.””

Nathaniel froze.

Ruby noticed.

“What?””

He looked at Emily.

“You said keep her safe.””

Emily didn’t respond.

Nathaniel slowly stood.

“Ruby.””

The little girl looked at him.

“How old are you?””

“Eight.””

“When were you born?””

Emily immediately said:

“Nathaniel.””

But it was too late.

He was already doing the math.

His eyes moved to Emily.

Then back to Ruby.

The room became painfully quiet.

“Emily…”

She looked down.

Nathaniel’s voice barely worked.

“Is Ruby my daughter?””

Ruby stopped breathing.

The question felt bigger than the room.

Bigger than the building.

Bigger than anything she had ever known.

Her mother’s face crumbled.

For eight years, Ruby had wondered why she had her mother’s eyes but never knew anything about her father.

Now she was hearing his name for the first time.

Emily reached for her.

“Ruby, sweetheart—”

But Ruby pulled back slightly.

“Is it true?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Nathaniel covered his mouth.

The decorated general who commanded thousands of people suddenly looked like a man who had lost twenty years of his life.

“I had a daughter.””

Ruby stared at him.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

A long silence followed.

Then an alarm suddenly sounded through the building.

Red lights flashed.

Everyone looked toward the door.

An officer rushed inside.

“General!””

Nathaniel stood immediately.

“What happened?””

The officer handed him a phone.

“Someone accessed the old Carter file remotely.””

Nathaniel looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who?””

The officer swallowed.

“The access code belongs to someone who shouldn’t exist.””

Nathaniel stared at the name appearing on the display.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Daniel Vale is alive.””
