Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Lie
Marcus felt like the room had tilted.
The words didn’t make sense.
“By the person who raised me?””
Robert Gallagher nodded slowly.
Marcus looked at Rachel.
Then Principal Harris.
Then back at Robert.
“You’re talking about my mother?””
Nobody answered.
That was enough.
Marcus stood up.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“You’re wrong.””
Robert didn’t argue.
“I wish I was.””
Marcus grabbed the edge of the chair.
“My mother protected me.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised him.
Robert continued.
“She did.””
“Then why are you saying she destroyed my family?””
Robert looked at him sadly.
“Because sometimes people make terrible choices while believing they are doing the right thing.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Marcus, we’re not saying your mother didn’t love you.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Rachel took a breath.
“We’re saying someone convinced her that hiding the truth was the only way to keep you safe.””
Marcus looked at the letter.
His father’s words suddenly felt different.
Someone made sure I never got the chance.
He had always assumed the enemy was a stranger.
Someone outside his family.
But now he wondered.
How close had that person been?
That evening, Marcus confronted his mother again.
Angela opened the door and immediately knew.
“You know.””
Marcus stood there.
“I need you to tell me what happened.””
She stepped aside.
They sat in the living room where Marcus had spent his entire childhood.
The same room where she had helped him with homework.
The same room where she had told him his father was gone.
“I was scared,” Angela whispered.
Marcus looked at her.
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
“Dad was trying to protect people.””
“I know.””
The answer shocked him.
“You knew?””
Angela started crying.
“I knew Daniel was right.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why did you lie?””
Angela covered her face.
“Because they came to me.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
And for a moment, Marcus saw something he had never seen before.
Fear.
“They told me if I helped Daniel, they would take you away from me.””
Marcus’s anger weakened.
“Who told you that?””
Angela didn’t answer.
She walked to a drawer and pulled out a small key.
She placed it on the table.
“Your father left this with me.””
Marcus looked at it.
“What is it for?””
“A storage box.””
“Where?””
Angela looked at him.
“The old train station.””
Marcus picked up the key.
“Why didn’t you ever open it?””
Angela’s voice broke.
“Because Daniel told me if anything happened to him, the truth inside that box could put you in danger.””
Marcus stared at the key.
Then he noticed something engraved on the metal.
A single name.
Not his father’s.
Not his mother’s.
Someone else’s.
Clara Gallagher.
His former teacher.
The woman who humiliated him.
The woman who handed him the letter.
The woman who somehow knew his family’s darkest secret.
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Why does Mrs. Gallagher have a key connected to my father?””
Angela’s face went pale.
And before she could answer, Marcus’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
But then he saw the message appear.
One sentence.
May you like
And it made his entire body go cold.
*“If you open that box, you’ll finally learn why your father never came home.””*
