Chapter 10: The Truth My Mother Hid

Marcus held the envelope in his hands for almost a full minute.

Nobody spoke.

The old station felt colder than before.

The words written across the front seemed impossible to ignore.

Open this only after you learn what your mother did.

His mother.

Not Mrs. Gallagher.

Not Richard Hale.

Angela Carter.

The person who had raised him.

The person who had packed his lunches, held him when he cried, and stayed awake during every fever.

The person who had also hidden the truth.

Ethan looked at him carefully.

“Marcus…”

Marcus shook his head.

“I need to know.””

Mrs. Gallagher stood nearby, her expression full of regret.

“You have every right to hate me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I don’t know what I feel yet.””

It was the most honest answer he could give.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

But this one wasn’t from his father.

It was from his mother.

The handwriting was familiar.

Marcus,

His chest tightened.

If you are reading this, then everything I feared has happened. The truth finally reached you.

He kept reading.

I wanted to tell you when you were younger. Many times. I would sit outside your bedroom door and almost wake you up just to explain everything.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He remembered those nights.

His mother sitting on the edge of his bed.

Always looking tired.

Always looking like she wanted to say something.

But every time I looked at you, I remembered the promise I made to your father.

Marcus stopped.

A promise.

The letter continued.

Daniel didn’t ask me to lie because he wanted to disappear. He asked me because he knew someone powerful was trying to destroy him.

Marcus looked up.

Mrs. Gallagher whispered, “Keep reading.””

He did.

The night Daniel left, he came home with evidence. He had proof that Richard Hale had been manipulating company records and covering dangerous decisions.

Marcus looked at the notebook.

Everything connected.

But Daniel also discovered something worse. Richard had someone close to him.

Marcus’s eyes moved faster.

Someone who had access to our home.

His breathing changed.

Then he saw the next line.

Someone who knew everything about our family.

Marcus lowered the letter.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

He continued.

I thought I knew who it was. I was wrong.

A strange feeling moved through him.

His mother hadn’t written this as a confession.

She had written it as a warning.

The reason I stayed silent was because Daniel told me not to trust anyone. Not the police. Not the company. Not even people who claimed they wanted to help.

Marcus looked at Mrs. Gallagher.

She nodded slowly.

“That was Daniel.””

Marcus continued reading.

After Daniel disappeared, I found out Richard was still searching for the evidence. I knew if he found it, he would come after you.

A tear dropped onto the paper.

So I made the hardest choice of my life. I let you believe your father abandoned you.

Marcus looked away.

The pain was different now.

Because for the first time, he understood.

His mother hadn’t hidden the truth because she didn’t love him.

She hid it because she was terrified.

But fear didn’t erase the damage.

It only explained it.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

Marcus, there is one more person who knows what happened that night.

His fingers tightened.

And you have already met him.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

Then at Mrs. Gallagher.

“Who?””

Mrs. Gallagher looked toward the door.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Marcus stood.

“Who?””

A sound came from outside.

A car engine.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone entered the station.

Marcus turned.

May you like

And the person standing there was someone he never expected.

His grandfather.
