Chapter 5: The Secret Everyone Buried
Marcus stared at the photograph until the details stopped making sense.
His mother.
Mrs. Gallagher.
His father.
Standing together.
Three people he never imagined would share the same moment.
“Where did you get this?”” Marcus asked.
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“It was found in an old investigation file.””
“What investigation?””
She hesitated.
“The one nobody wanted reopened.””
Ethan looked between them.
“Why does everyone keep talking like there’s some secret club Marcus isn’t allowed to know about?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Marcus.
“Because sometimes adults convince themselves they’re protecting children when they’re actually protecting themselves.””
Those words stayed with Marcus.
That night, he sat at his kitchen table with the photograph in front of him.
His mother, Angela, walked in carrying groceries.
She stopped the moment she saw it.
The bag slipped slightly in her hand.
“Where did you get that?””
Marcus looked up.
“So you know it.””
Angela’s face changed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice was calm.
But this time, it wasn’t silence.
It was control.
“I spent my whole life believing my father abandoned me.””
Angela sat down slowly.
“Please listen to me.””
“Did he?””
She looked at the photograph.
Then away.
“Marcus, some things are complicated.””
“That’s not an answer.””
The room became quiet.
Angela wiped her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked at him.
“When you were old enough.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Mom, I’m sixteen.””
“I know.””
“Then why did I have to find out from my former teacher?””
Angela looked shocked.
“Former teacher?””
Marcus placed the letter on the table.
“She gave me this.””
Angela picked it up.
The moment she recognized Daniel’s handwriting, tears filled her eyes.
“Oh my God.””
Marcus watched her carefully.
“You knew about this letter.””
Angela closed her eyes.
“I thought it was gone.””
“Why?””
No answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Marcus stood.
“I deserve the truth.””
Angela finally looked at him.
“Your father was trying to expose something.””
“What?””
“A system.””
Marcus frowned.
“What system?””
Angela looked toward the window.
“When your father worked for Gallagher Industries, he discovered they were hiding safety problems. Products were being approved even though they weren’t safe.””
Marcus listened.
“And Mrs. Gallagher?””
“She was involved.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“So why was she my teacher?””
Angela shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But Marcus knew.
Someone had placed her there.
Someone wanted her close.
The next morning, Marcus went back to school.
The hallway felt different.
Students who once ignored him now stopped and watched.
Not because they pitied him.
Because they knew something bigger was happening.
Ethan met him by the lockers.
“Your mom told you?””
Marcus nodded.
“There’s more.””
Before Ethan could ask, Principal Harris approached.
“Marcus, we need to talk.””
They followed him into his office.
Rachel was already there.
Along with another person.
An older man wearing a dark suit.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
He had seen his picture before.
“Who is that?””
Rachel looked serious.
“His name is Robert Gallagher.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Mrs. Gallagher’s father?””
The man stood.
“Yes.””
His voice was low.
“And I owe you an explanation.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“About what?””
Robert looked at the letter.
“About what happened to your father.””
Nobody moved.
Then Robert said the words Marcus never expected.
“Daniel Carter didn’t disappear.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Robert looked down.
“He was forced to leave.””
Ethan whispered, “By who?””
Robert looked directly at Marcus.
May you like
And his answer changed everything.
“By the person who raised you.””
