Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Door

Marcus couldn’t stop staring at the photograph.

His mother.

Outside the warehouse.

The same day his father disappeared.

The image felt like a betrayal.

But something about it bothered him.

The expression on her face.

She wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t standing confidently.

She looked afraid.

“She wasn’t helping him,” Marcus whispered.

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus pointed at the picture.

“Look at her.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“She looks scared.””

Mrs. Gallagher nodded.

“Because she was.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

Thomas sighed.

“Angela wasn’t working with Richard.””

Marcus turned.

“Then why was she there?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Thomas said:

“Because Richard forced her.””

The words changed everything.

Marcus looked back at the picture.

His mother wasn’t a traitor.

She was a victim.

But that raised another question.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Thomas looked at him sadly.

“Because Richard made sure she believed telling you would put you in danger.””

Marcus sat down.

For the first time, his anger started mixing with something else.

Understanding.

Pain.

He had spent years thinking his family didn’t trust him.

Maybe the truth was worse.

They trusted him.

They just loved him enough to lie.

The next day, Marcus went home.

His mother was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked like she had been waiting all night.

When she saw his face, she knew.

“You know.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know you were there.””

Angela closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because Richard told me he would destroy you.””

Marcus sat across from her.

“You should have trusted me.””

Angela looked at him.

“You were eight years old.””

The answer broke through his anger.

Because she was right.

He imagined himself as a child.

Trying to understand why his father vanished.

Trying to understand why his mother cried when she thought he wasn’t watching.

Angela reached across the table.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus looked at her hand.

Then slowly placed his own over it.

“I’m still angry.””

“I know.””

“But I believe you.””

Angela started crying.

For the first time in years, they were crying together.

Not separately.

Later that evening, Marcus returned to his room.

The old notebook sat on his desk.

He opened it again.

Near the back, he found something he hadn’t noticed before.

A hidden page.

Inside was a list of names.

People connected to Richard Hale.

Executives.

Officials.

Witnesses.

Then he saw one name.

A name that made his heart stop.

Daniel Carter had written:

The person who can expose Richard is not someone outside the company.

Marcus leaned closer.

The next line was underlined.

The truth is inside my own family.

His phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Marcus answered.

Nobody spoke at first.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Marcus.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

It was someone who was supposed to be gone.

Someone who had disappeared sixteen years ago.

His father.

“Dad?”” Marcus whispered.

A long silence followed.

Then the voice said:

“I’m sorry I waited this long.””

Marcus stood up.

“Where are you?””

The voice became urgent.

“You need to listen carefully.””

“Dad, where are you?””

“Richard knows you found the evidence.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

The street outside was empty.

Too empty.

Then his father said the words that made Marcus’s blood run cold.

“Because I was never the one who disappeared.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Your grandfather was the one who hid me.””
