Chapter 11: The Man Who Knew Everything

Marcus couldn’t move.

His grandfather, Thomas Carter, stood in the doorway.

The same man who had spent years telling him to stop asking about his father.

The same man who always changed the subject.

The same man who said Daniel was “better left in the past.””

Marcus stared.

“You knew?””

Thomas looked older than Marcus remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying the secret had aged him.

“I knew enough.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“That’s your answer?””

Thomas stepped inside.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“Everyone says that.””

The words hit harder than he intended.

But they were true.

Everyone had protected him.

Everyone except the truth.

Thomas looked down.

“I failed.””

The station became silent.

Marcus held the letter.

“Tell me what happened.””

Thomas looked at Mrs. Gallagher.

Then at the old recording device.

Then finally at Marcus.

“Your father found out Richard wasn’t just hiding mistakes at Gallagher Industries.””

“What was he hiding?””

Thomas took a breath.

“He was building a network.””

Marcus frowned.

“A network?””

“People who controlled information. People who could ruin reputations, careers, even families.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Why would a company do that?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because power doesn’t always look like money.””

Marcus thought about Richard’s confidence.

The way he walked into the station.

The way he believed nobody could stop him.

Thomas continued.

“Daniel discovered Richard was collecting information on everyone around him. Employees. Investors. Anyone who could become a threat.””

Marcus looked at the notebook.

“And my father found proof.””

“Yes.””

“What happened after that?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“He came to me.””

Marcus froze.

“You?””

Thomas nodded.

“Daniel trusted me.””

Marcus looked hurt.

“Then why didn’t you help him?””

Thomas looked away.

That was the first time Marcus saw shame on his grandfather’s face.

“Because I was scared.””

The answer surprised him.

Thomas continued.

“Richard threatened your family. He told me if I helped Daniel, you and your mother would lose everything.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“So you let him go?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I made a terrible choice.””

The words sat between them.

Nobody defended him.

Nobody needed to.

Marcus understood.

Adults had been making choices around him his entire life.

And he was always the one who paid the price.

Suddenly, Mrs. Gallagher spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her bag and pulled out another file.

“I found this years ago.””

Thomas stared.

“Clara.””

“I should have shown it sooner.””

She handed it to Marcus.

Inside were newspaper articles.

Old reports.

And one picture.

Marcus recognized the location immediately.

The old Gallagher Industries warehouse.

The date was the day his father disappeared.

But what caught his attention wasn’t the building.

It was the person standing outside.

A person Marcus knew.

Someone who had comforted him.

Someone who had told him everything would be okay.

Marcus looked up slowly.

“No.””

Thomas whispered:

“Marcus…”

His voice shook.

“The person who helped Richard find your father…”

Marcus stared at the picture.

The person in the photo was his mother.

But something was wrong.

Because behind her, written in faded ink, were four words:

*She was being followed.*
