Chapter 13: The Father Behind the Silence

Marcus stood completely still.

The phone felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.

“Dad?””

His voice barely came out.

On the other end, there was a shaky breath.

A sound Marcus had imagined thousands of times.

A sound he never thought he would actually hear.

“Marcus.””

The way his father said his name broke something inside him.

Not because it was painful.

Because it was real.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel Carter was silent.

Then he answered softly.

“Yes.””

Marcus sat down on the edge of his bed.

His entire life had been built around an absence.

A missing father.

A missing explanation.

A missing piece.

And now that piece was speaking.

“Where have you been?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Somewhere Richard Hale couldn’t reach.””

Marcus looked toward the door.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I spent sixteen years trying to make sure you were safe.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“That’s what everyone says.””

The words came out sharper than he intended.

Daniel became quiet.

“I know.””

Marcus felt tears forming.

“You know what it felt like?””

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it’s like to grow up thinking your own father chose to leave.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“You’re right.””

Marcus froze.

Daniel continued.

“I don’t know what it’s like to be you. And I’m sorry I made you carry that pain.””

Those words hurt more than an excuse would have.

Because his father wasn’t defending himself.

He was accepting the damage.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Because every time I got close, someone moved against your family.””

Marcus remembered the photograph.

His mother’s fear.

His grandfather’s guilt.

Mrs. Gallagher’s regret.

“Who?””

Daniel paused.

“Your grandfather.””

Marcus stood immediately.

“No.””

“I know that’s hard to hear.””

“You’re wrong.””

Daniel sighed.

“Marcus, I wish I was.””

The next morning, Marcus brought everyone together.

His mother.

Thomas.

Mrs. Gallagher.

Ethan.

The moment Thomas saw Marcus’s expression, he knew.

“You spoke to him.””

Everyone looked shocked.

Angela covered her mouth.

“Daniel?””

Marcus nodded.

“He’s alive.””

The room went silent.

Thomas sat down.

Slowly.

Like his body suddenly couldn’t carry the weight anymore.

Angela started crying.

“Where is he?””

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Before I answer that, I need the truth.””

Thomas didn’t look up.

“Marcus…”

“No more secrets.””

The words were calm.

But final.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I helped Daniel disappear.””

Angela looked confused.

“What?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Richard was getting closer. Daniel had proof that could destroy powerful people. But he also knew they would hurt you.””

Marcus stared.

“So you hid him?””

Thomas nodded.

“I created the story that Daniel abandoned you.””

The room felt frozen.

Angela looked devastated.

“You let me believe that?””

“I thought it was the only way.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You didn’t protect us.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised everyone.

“I was afraid. And fear made me choose silence.””

Marcus looked down.

For years, he had wanted someone to admit they were wrong.

Now everyone finally was.

But it didn’t erase the lost years.

Daniel called again that night.

This time, Marcus put the phone on speaker.

Everyone listened.

Thomas heard his son’s voice for the first time in sixteen years.

“Dad.””

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“Thomas.””

The two men were silent.

Then Thomas whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“I failed you.””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked down.

“But you’re alive.””

Daniel answered:

“Because you helped me disappear.””

The room went silent.

Then Daniel added:

“But someone else helped Richard find us.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel took a breath.

“The person who gave Richard the final information.””

Everyone waited.

Then Daniel said:

“It was someone inside our family.””

Marcus looked around the room.

His heart sank.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice became barely audible.

“The person who raised Richard Hale.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew the answer.

May you like

Richard Hale’s mother.

And she was still alive.
