Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I kept staring at the photograph.
My father.
Alive.
Standing outside my company.
The man I buried eight years ago.
The man whose death had shaped every decision I made afterward.
My hands trembled slightly.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was trying to understand how my entire life could have been built on a lie.
"Alexander.""
Emily's voice pulled me back.
I looked at her.
"You knew?""
She shook her head quickly.
"No.""
"Then why did you say he's not the only one who came back?""
Her eyes moved toward the photograph.
"Because I saw someone else.""
My heart sank.
"Who?""
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone in the room went quiet.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A familiar voice spoke.
Older.
Deeper.
But unmistakable.
"Son.""
I stopped breathing.
I hadn't heard that voice in eight years.
"Dad?""
The room froze.
Emily covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at me in disbelief.
The man on the phone sighed.
"I knew this day would come.""
I couldn't move.
"You died.""
A pause.
"I know what you were told.""
My voice became colder.
"You let me believe you were dead.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
I laughed once.
A bitter, empty sound.
"Protect me?""
I looked around the room.
"Your disappearance destroyed me.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice cracked.
"You weren't there when I had to rebuild everything. You weren't there when I had to explain to people why the man who created the company was suddenly gone.""
Silence.
Then my father said something I didn't expect.
"I wasn't gone by choice.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Then whose choice was it?""
Another pause.
And then:
"Richard Caldwell's.""
The name hit like a punch.
I looked at Emily.
She already knew.
"What did he do?""
My father's voice lowered.
"Your company was never his investment.""
"What?""
"He wanted control.""
I stared at the documents on the table.
"He couldn't take the company legally. So he needed someone inside.""
"Melissa.""
"Yes.""
"And you knew?""
"I discovered it too late.""
I walked toward the window.
The city stretched below me.
A city where I thought I knew exactly who I was.
Now everything looked unfamiliar.
"Why didn't you come back?""
My father's voice became quiet.
"Because the people who wanted me gone threatened your life.""
I closed my eyes.
A memory flashed.
Me at twenty-nine.
Standing beside my father's empty office.
Thinking I had lost everything.
Thinking I was alone.
"They told me if I returned, you would be next.""
I swallowed.
"And you believed them?""
"I saw what they were capable of.""
The line went silent.
Then my father said:
"Alexander, listen carefully.""
I waited.
"Richard is not trying to destroy your company.""
My brow furrowed.
"Then what is he doing?""
"He is trying to take something more valuable.""
"What?""
My father answered:
"Your daughter.""
The room went cold.
I turned immediately toward Lily's photo on my phone.
"No.""
"That's why Vanessa was there.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She wasn't just trying to humiliate Lily.""
My father continued.
"She was testing security.""
I remembered Vanessa's actions.
The way she walked through the ballroom.
The way she knew where to stand.
The way she wasn't afraid.
"Why?""
My father's voice became urgent.
"Because they need access to you. And Lily is the easiest way to break you.""
I ended the call.
Not because I was finished.
Because I couldn't listen anymore.
The thought of anyone seeing my daughter as a weapon made something inside me break.
Emily stepped closer.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at her.
"You knew about Lily?""
She nodded.
"I knew they would use her someday.""
"Then why didn't you warn me?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I tried.""
The words stopped me.
"What?""
She reached into her bag again.
And pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Damaged.
Familiar.
"I sent you letters.""
My face changed.
"I never got them.""
"I know.""
She handed them to me.
"Because Melissa intercepted them.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter I had never seen.
Emily's handwriting.
The first line made my chest tighten.
*Alexander, if you're reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*
I looked at Emily.
"How many?""
She whispered:
"All of them.""
Before I could respond, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
"Mr. Whitmore...""
"What?""
He looked at me.
"It's Lily's school.""
My blood ran cold.
"What about Lily?""
May you like
Daniel swallowed.
"They said someone came to pick her up.""
