Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Screens

The ballroom had never been so quiet.

Not even when Lily cried.

Not even when the orchestra stopped.

This silence was different.

It was the silence of people realizing they had been watching the wrong person.

Vanessa Caldwell stared at the giant screen above the stage.

The confident smile she had worn all evening was gone.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

The photograph remained displayed behind me.

A picture of Vanessa standing beside a charity board announcement from three years earlier.

Below it were several headlines.

*Board Member Resigns After Donation Dispute.*

*Questions Raised Over Missing Charity Funds.*

*Former Committee Members Speak Out.*

The room erupted in whispers.

"What is this?""

"Is that really her?""

"How did someone get those records?""

Vanessa spun around.

"Turn that off!""

Nobody moved.

She looked at the technicians.

"Turn it off now!""

The technicians looked toward me.

I hadn't put the image there.

I didn't know who had.

But I knew one thing.

Someone wanted the truth exposed.

Vanessa marched toward the stage.

"This is slander!""

Her voice echoed through the ballroom.

I stepped away from the microphone.

"Interesting choice of words.""

She stopped.

"What?""

"You called this slander before asking what the information was.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think you're clever?""

"No.""

I looked at Lily, who was still sitting near the hallway entrance with one of the staff members.

"I think a child being dragged across a floor deserves more attention than your dress.""

Several people lowered their eyes.

Vanessa's face turned red.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""

I almost smiled.

She had said those exact words before.

But this time, they sounded different.

Less like a warning.

More like desperation.

A man near the back of the ballroom stepped forward.

"Vanessa.""

Everyone turned.

It was Harold Bennett.

A respected businessman and one of the oldest donors at the event.

Vanessa froze.

"Harold.""

His expression was cold.

"I thought I recognized that name.""

She forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous.""

Harold shook his head.

"No. What's ridiculous is that I ignored my instincts three years ago.""

The room became even quieter.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"I know exactly what I'm talking about.""

He looked at the screen.

"I was on the board when those questions came up.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"And?""

"And you convinced everyone it was just a misunderstanding.""

She crossed her arms.

"Because it was.""

Harold looked at her.

"Then why did you resign the next morning?""

No one spoke.

The question hung in the air.

Vanessa looked around.

She was searching for someone to rescue her.

Someone to defend her.

But nobody moved.

I walked over to Lily.

She immediately reached for my hand.

"Daddy?""

"I'm here.""

She looked toward the crowd.

"Are they mad?""

I squeezed her fingers.

"No, sweetheart.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"They're just seeing things clearly.""

Before Vanessa could respond, Richard Caldwell entered the ballroom.

He moved quickly.

Too quickly.

His expensive suit was perfectly pressed, but his face showed panic.

"What's going on?""

Vanessa immediately walked toward him.

"Someone is attacking me.""

Richard looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

He knew about this.

"You knew," I said.

Richard looked at me.

"What?""

"You knew about the accusations.""

His face hardened.

"Watch yourself.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"Your wife hurt my daughter, then tried to make her the villain. Now this appears, and your first reaction isn't confusion.""

I pointed at the screen.

"It's fear.""

Richard's silence answered the question.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Richard, say something.""

He looked around the room.

Then at me.

"Mr. Whitmore, this is not the place for this conversation.""

I shook my head.

"Actually, I think it is.""

I picked up the microphone again.

"Everyone here came tonight to support children.""

The crowd listened.

"Not corporations. Not reputations. Children.""

I looked at Lily.

"And tonight, one child was treated like she didn't matter.""

Nobody spoke.

Then a small voice came from behind me.

"Daddy?""

I turned.

Lily was holding her damaged Christmas card.

She walked slowly toward me.

The entire ballroom watched as she held it up.

"The lady stepped on my card.""

A few people gasped.

Vanessa looked away.

Lily continued.

"I made it for him because he works too much and I wanted him to know I love him.""

My throat tightened.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

And that told me everything.

A child showing pain bothered her more than a screen full of accusations.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A woman in a dark coat stepped inside.

She looked around.

Then directly at Vanessa.

"I guess you thought nobody would ever tell the truth.""

Vanessa went completely still.

Because she knew her.

And before anyone could ask who she was, the woman walked forward and said:

"My name is Claire Morgan.""

She looked at me.

"And I was the person who uncovered what Vanessa did three years ago.""

A murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa whispered:

"No...""

Claire reached into her bag.

"I brought proof.""

She held up a folder.

May you like

And on the front page was a name that made Richard Caldwell's face lose all color.

His own.
