Chapter 8: The Woman Who Vanished
I didn't sleep that night.
Not because of the scandal.
Not because of the accusations.
Not because of the damage to my reputation.
I couldn't sleep because one name kept repeating in my head.
Emily.
Six years ago, she disappeared from my life overnight.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
No chance for me to understand.
And now she was back.
At my Christmas gala.
On my guest list.
Watching everything happen.
The next morning, I drove Lily to school before heading to my office.
I wanted to protect her from the chaos.
She deserved normal mornings.
Pancakes.
Cartoons.
Questions about homework.
Not headlines about her father’s charity gala.
Before she got out of the car, she looked at me.
"Daddy?""
"Yeah?""
"Are you still having the Christmas party next year?""
I smiled.
"Of course.""
"Even after yesterday?""
I looked at her.
"Especially after yesterday.""
She nodded.
Then she handed me something.
The second Christmas card.
The one she had saved.
"For your office.""
I took it.
"Thank you.""
She opened the door.
Then stopped.
"Don't forget.""
"Forget what?""
"You're my hero.""
My throat tightened.
I waited until she entered the school.
Then I drove to Whitmore Enterprises.
The moment I walked into my office, I knew something was wrong.
My employees were quiet.
Too quiet.
People looked at me and immediately looked away.
Daniel followed behind me.
"The board is requesting an emergency meeting.""
"About the gala?""
He nodded.
"About everything.""
I entered the conference room.
Six executives were waiting.
Including Melissa's empty chair.
That bothered me more than it should have.
"Where is she?""
Nobody answered.
Finally, one director spoke.
"Alexander, we need to discuss recent events.""
I sat down.
"Go ahead.""
He placed several documents on the table.
"Your company's reputation is at risk.""
I looked at the papers.
Articles.
Social media posts.
Rumors.
Everything was moving fast.
But one thing stood out.
Someone had released private information about the gala.
Not the incident with Lily.
Something else.
A confidential donor list.
"Who leaked this?""
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
"You called this meeting because someone betrayed us.""
The director looked uncomfortable.
"We called this meeting because your personal decisions are affecting the company.""
I looked up.
"My personal decisions?""
He glanced at the documents.
"Bringing unknown people into corporate events.""
I understood immediately.
Emily.
They were blaming me for her appearance.
Before I could respond, the conference room door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Dark coat.
Tired eyes.
Older than I remembered.
But unmistakably her.
Emily Carter.
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
She looked at me.
And for a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
"Alexander.""
I stood slowly.
"Why are you here?""
Her eyes filled with something I couldn't identify.
Regret.
Fear.
Pain.
"I came because I ran out of time.""
Nobody moved.
I stepped closer.
"Six years.""
Her face fell.
"I know.""
"Six years, Emily.""
"I know.""
"Do you know what I thought?""
She swallowed.
"I know what you were told.""
That sentence stopped me.
"What does that mean?""
She looked around the room.
"Not here.""
I almost laughed.
"Everyone here already thinks they know the truth.""
Emily looked at the executives.
Then back at me.
"They don't.""
She reached into her bag.
And placed an envelope on the table.
My name was written on the front.
My handwriting.
My old handwriting.
I stared at it.
"What is that?""
Emily looked at me.
"The letter you wrote me the night before everything happened.""
My blood went cold.
"I never sent that.""
"I know.""
She pushed it toward me.
"Because someone took it.""
I opened my mouth.
No words came out.
Emily continued.
"The night I left, I wasn't running away from you.""
She looked at me.
"I was running because someone threatened Lily.""
My entire body went still.
"What?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"They told me if I stayed, your daughter would disappear.""
The room vanished.
All I could hear was my own heartbeat.
"Who?""
Emily looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
"The same person who was standing next to you when you built your empire.""
I looked around the room.
At the executives.
At the people I trusted.
May you like
Then Emily said the name.
And I realized the betrayal had been much closer than I ever imagined.
