Chapter 13: The Final Betrayal

I read the sentence three times.

My brain refused to accept it.

*The person who helped Richard take control of my company was not Melissa.*

I looked at the next line.

*It was someone you have loved your entire life.*

The room felt colder.

Emily watched me carefully.

"Alexander?""

I didn't answer.

Because there were too many names.

Too many possibilities.

My father had known.

He had known someone close to me was involved.

Someone I trusted.

Someone I loved.

I continued reading.

*I wanted to tell you the truth years ago. But the person responsible had access to everything I built, including the people I cared about.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

Then I saw the name.

A single name.

And the world tilted.

*Your mother.*

I stopped breathing.

No.

Not my mother.

My mother had died when I was twelve.

She was the person who taught me kindness.

The person who stayed up late helping me with homework.

The person who made every Christmas feel magical.

She couldn't be part of this.

"Alexander?""

Emily stepped closer.

I looked up.

"My mother.""

Emily's expression changed.

She didn't look surprised.

That hurt more.

"You knew?""

She quickly shook her head.

"Not everything.""

"But you suspected.""

She looked away.

"I knew there was someone close to your family.""

My voice became quiet.

"And you didn't tell me?""

"I tried.""

"When?""

"Before I left.""

The anger rose.

Not because Emily betrayed me.

Because I suddenly realized how many people had known pieces of the truth while I lived inside a lie.

I looked back at the letter.

My father's handwriting continued.

*Your mother was not the person who planned everything. She was manipulated. Richard used her fears and weaknesses against her.*

I stopped.

That sounded more like the mother I knew.

Not a villain.

Someone who made a terrible choice.

I kept reading.

*She believed she was protecting you. Richard convinced her that if she helped him, you would inherit everything safely. She didn't understand his true intentions until it was too late.*

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

The person who taught me right from wrong.

The person who told me honesty mattered.

She had still made a choice that destroyed my family.

A sound came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Daniel stood there.

His face was pale.

"Mr. Whitmore.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He held up his phone.

"We found Richard.""

"Where?""

"He went to the old Caldwell estate.""

Emily immediately looked at me.

"Why?""

I already knew.

The file.

The evidence.

Everything Richard had spent years searching for.

"He knows we found this room.""

Daniel nodded.

"There's more.""

I waited.

"Your mother was there.""

The words hit harder than anything.

"She's alive?""

Daniel looked down.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

Eight years.

Everyone believed my father was dead.

Twelve years since my mother died.

And now both secrets were breaking open at once.

Emily touched my arm.

"You don't have to go alone.""

I looked at her.

For the first time in years, I didn't see the person who abandoned me.

I saw the person who had been fighting alone too.

"Come with me.""

We drove to the Caldwell estate.

The house stood at the edge of the city, hidden behind tall gates.

A place built for people who wanted privacy.

Or secrets.

The front door was open.

That was the first warning.

Inside, everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then we heard voices.

Richard.

And a woman.

My mother's voice.

I froze.

After all these years.

A voice I thought existed only in memories.

"You promised nobody would get hurt.""

My mother's voice trembled.

Richard answered coldly.

"You stopped being useful the moment Alexander started asking questions.""

I stepped into the room.

"Mom.""

The conversation stopped.

She turned.

And for a moment, she looked exactly like the woman from my childhood.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

"Alexander...""

I couldn't move.

She covered her mouth.

"My son.""

Richard immediately stepped forward.

"Listen to me.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

My voice shook.

"I've listened to enough lies.""

My mother started crying.

"I wanted to protect you.""

I looked at her.

"By helping the man who destroyed our family?""

She broke down.

"I didn't know.""

Richard laughed.

A cold, cruel laugh.

"She never did.""

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled.

"Your mother was always easy to control.""

My fists tightened.

"You used her.""

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised everyone.

Richard didn't even pretend anymore.

"I used her. I used Melissa. I used Vanessa.""

He stepped closer.

"And I almost used you.""

"Why?""

He smiled.

"Because your father hid something from me.""

I held up the file.

"You mean this?""

For the first time, Richard looked afraid.

Just for a second.

Then he smiled again.

"Too late.""

My mother looked at him.

"What did you do?""

Richard turned toward the window.

A car engine started outside.

Then he said:

"I made sure this ends tonight.""

May you like

The lights suddenly went out.

And in the darkness, I heard a door lock behind us.
