Chapter 11: The Girl They Tried to Take

I don't remember leaving the building.

I don't remember the elevator.

I don't remember the drive.

I only remember one thought.

Lily.

Someone tried to take my daughter.

Every red light felt like an insult.

Every second felt stolen.

By the time I reached the school, my hands were shaking.

The principal was waiting outside.

Her face told me everything.

Something had happened.

"Mr. Whitmore.""

"Where is my daughter?""

"She's inside.""

The relief lasted half a second.

"Is she okay?""

The principal nodded.

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

Then opened them.

"What happened?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"A woman arrived claiming to be a family friend.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"She used your name.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?""

The principal showed me a visitor form.

The signature wasn't familiar.

But the name was.

*Emily Carter.*

I turned slowly.

Emily had followed me.

"No.""

The principal looked confused.

"Mr. Whitmore?""

I stared at the paper.

Someone had used Emily's identity.

Someone wanted me to blame her.

A few minutes later, Lily ran out of the classroom.

"Daddy!""

I dropped to my knees.

She jumped into my arms.

I held her so tightly she laughed.

"Daddy, you're squeezing me.""

I immediately loosened my grip.

"I'm sorry.""

She looked at my face.

"You look scared.""

I forced a smile.

"I just missed you.""

She touched my cheek.

"It's okay.""

That simple sentence nearly destroyed me.

Children trusted so easily.

They believed the world was safe.

My job was to keep it that way.

And someone was trying to take that from me.

Outside the school, Emily approached carefully.

"I heard.""

I stood.

"Did you send someone here?""

Her face fell.

"No.""

"Someone used your name.""

She looked at the paper.

Then went pale.

"They're setting me up.""

"Why?""

"Because they know I matter to you.""

The answer bothered me.

Because it was true.

Emily had been important.

Before everything.

Before the betrayal.

Before the pain.

But now I couldn't afford confusion.

I needed facts.

"Tell me everything.""

Emily nodded.

"Richard Caldwell knew about your father before you did.""

"How?""

"Because he was involved in your father's disappearance.""

I looked at Lily.

Then back at Emily.

"And Melissa?""

"She helped him.""

The pieces were coming together.

Slowly.

Painfully.

But one question remained.

"Why Lily?""

Emily's expression changed.

"Because of something your father left behind.""

"What?""

"A file.""

I frowned.

"What file?""

"Your father spent years collecting evidence against Richard.""

She looked at me.

"Before he disappeared, he hid everything.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

I stared at her.

"Then why are you here?""

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

"Because Richard believes you know where it is.""

I shook my head.

"I don't.""

Emily nodded.

"I believe you.""

A car horn sounded.

We both turned.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

My instincts immediately screamed.

Something was wrong.

The passenger window lowered.

A man looked directly at us.

Then drove away.

I memorized the license plate.

Daniel called seconds later.

"Mr. Whitmore.""

"Tell me.""

His voice was tense.

"We found Melissa's apartment.""

"And?""

A pause.

"She left everything behind.""

"Everything?""

"Almost.""

"What did she take?""

Daniel answered:

"Only one thing.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What?""

May you like

His voice dropped.

"A photograph of Lily.""
