Chapter 12: The Truth Hidden in the Foundation

The photograph sat on my desk.

A picture of Lily.

Taken outside her school three months earlier.

I stared at it for a long time.

The image itself was innocent.

My daughter smiling.

Holding a backpack.

Looking like every other six-year-old in the world.

But knowing someone had taken it secretly changed everything.

It wasn't a photograph anymore.

It was a warning.

"Alexander.""

I looked up.

Emily stood in the doorway.

She had barely slept.

Neither had I.

"Any news?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

She walked closer.

"What are you going to do?""

I looked at the photograph.

"I'm going to end this.""

Emily studied me.

"How?""

I leaned back.

"By finding what Richard is looking for.""

The foundation.

The company.

My father's disappearance.

Everything connected to one thing.

The secret he left behind.

I called Daniel.

"Bring me every document from the first five years of Whitmore Enterprises.""

"All of them?""

"All.""

He hesitated.

"That could take hours.""

"Then start now.""

Within an hour, my office was filled with old records.

Contracts.

Financial statements.

Personal notes.

Things I hadn't looked at in years.

Emily helped me search.

She knew where to look.

Not because she had the answers.

Because she understood my father.

"He would hide things in places people overlook.""

I opened another file.

"What does that mean?""

"He was careful.""

I laughed quietly.

"That sounds like him.""

For the first time all day, Emily smiled.

A small smile.

The kind I remembered.

Then she became serious.

"He loved you.""

I looked down.

"I thought he abandoned me.""

"He didn't.""

She touched the file.

"He was trying to save you.""

I wanted to believe that.

I did.

But pain doesn't disappear just because someone explains it.

Hours passed.

Then Daniel entered.

"I found something.""

We looked up.

He placed an old company blueprint on the table.

"What is this?""

"The original Whitmore headquarters.""

I studied it.

Nothing unusual.

Then Emily noticed something.

"Wait.""

She pointed.

"What's that?""

A small marking.

Hidden beneath the foundation plans.

A symbol my father used when I was a child.

A simple circle with a line through it.

My heart started racing.

"He used that whenever he hid something.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Where does it lead?""

I grabbed the blueprint.

The marking pointed to a storage area beneath the old building.

The old headquarters.

A place that had been abandoned after we moved.

"Nobody knows about this room.""

Emily looked at me.

"Your father does.""

I grabbed my coat.

"Not anymore.""

We drove there immediately.

The old Whitmore building stood empty.

Dust covered the entrance.

Memories covered every corner.

This was where everything began.

Before the money.

Before the fame.

Before the betrayal.

We reached the basement.

Behind a wall of old storage boxes was a small metal door.

Exactly where the blueprint showed.

Daniel looked at me.

"How do we open it?""

I reached into my pocket.

A key.

One I had carried for years.

My father's key.

I never knew what it opened.

The lock turned.

The door creaked.

Inside was a small room.

And sitting in the center was a single box.

No dust.

No damage.

Like someone had been there recently.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

And one envelope.

My name was written on it.

But this time, it wasn't my handwriting.

It was my father's.

I opened it slowly.

The first line made my blood freeze.

*Alexander, if you are reading this, then Richard Caldwell has finally found the file.*

I turned the page.

The next sentence was even worse.

*But there is one thing you need to know before you trust anyone again.*

I looked at Emily.

At Daniel.

At the hidden room.

Then I read the final line.

And every assumption I had made about my father's disappearance collapsed.

*The person who helped Richard take control of my company was not Melissa.*

A pause.

My hands tightened around the letter.

May you like

The next words were written beneath it.

*It was someone you have loved your entire life.*
