Chapter 7: The Name I Buried Six Years Ago
I stared at the guest list until the letters blurred.
My name.
Beside hers.
*Alexander Whitmore — Guest: Emily Carter.*
But Emily Carter had no reason to be there.
Not after six years.
Not after the way she disappeared.
Not after the promise she made that she would never come back.
"Daddy?""
Lily's small voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
I immediately folded the paper.
I didn't want her to see the fear on my face.
"I'm okay.""
She studied me.
Children always notice the things adults try hardest to hide.
"You look sad.""
I forced a smile.
"I'm just tired.""
She didn't believe me.
But she nodded anyway.
That was my daughter.
She carried emotions bigger than her tiny body.
Meanwhile, the ballroom was still drowning in chaos.
Vanessa was arguing with Richard near the entrance.
Claire was speaking quietly with several donors.
The screen behind the stage had finally gone dark.
But the damage was already done.
Everyone had seen enough.
Daniel approached me.
"Mr. Whitmore.""
I looked at him.
"Who added Emily Carter to the guest list?""
He hesitated.
"I don't know.""
"Find out.""
His expression changed.
"Immediately?""
"Immediately.""
He nodded and walked away.
I looked across the room.
Emily.
The name alone brought back memories I had spent years trying to bury.
Before Whitmore Enterprises became a billion-dollar company.
Before the charity foundation.
Before I became known as the businessman who built everything from nothing.
There was just me.
A young man with too much ambition and not enough patience.
And Emily.
She was the only person who saw me before the money.
Before the suits.
Before everyone started wanting something from me.
She saw the man underneath.
Then she betrayed me.
Or at least, that's what I believed.
A sudden movement caught my attention.
Vanessa was walking toward me.
Her confidence had returned slightly.
People like her always recovered quickly.
"Alexander.""
I looked at her.
"What do you want?""
She glanced around.
"I want to talk privately.""
"No.""
Her eyebrows lifted.
"No?""
"You don't get privacy after what you did.""
Her face tightened.
"I made a mistake.""
I almost laughed.
"A mistake is forgetting someone's birthday.""
I stepped closer.
"You hurt my daughter.""
For a second, something flashed in her eyes.
Not regret.
Annoyance.
"I already said I was sorry.""
"No, you said sorry because people started watching.""
She looked away.
Then lowered her voice.
"You think you're different from me?""
That caught me off guard.
"What?""
"You think you're some hero because you protected your daughter tonight.""
I stared at her.
She continued.
"You have no idea what people are capable of.""
I looked at the woman who had just humiliated a child.
"And you do?""
Her jaw tightened.
"Ask Emily.""
The name froze me.
Vanessa noticed.
Interesting.
"You know who she is.""
I said nothing.
She smiled slightly.
"There it is.""
"What?""
"The look.""
She leaned closer.
"The look of someone who remembers.""
Before I could answer, Richard called her name.
"Vanessa.""
She stepped back.
But before leaving, she whispered:
"Maybe tonight isn't about me.""
Then she walked away.
I hated that part of me believed her.
A few minutes later, Daniel returned.
His face told me something was wrong.
"What did you find?""
He handed me a tablet.
"The guest list was edited at 4:17 p.m.""
"By who?""
He hesitated.
"Your assistant.""
My stomach tightened.
"Which assistant?""
"Melissa.""
I stared at him.
Impossible.
Melissa had worked with me for four years.
She knew my schedule.
She knew my company.
She knew Lily.
"Where is she?""
Daniel looked away.
"She left twenty minutes ago.""
"Left?""
"She said she had a family emergency.""
I took the tablet.
There was one more thing.
A note attached to Emily's name.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*"He deserves to know the truth.""*
My heartbeat changed.
Because I knew that sentence.
I had seen it before.
Six years ago.
Written on a letter Emily left behind.
I looked toward the ballroom doors.
And for the first time that night, I wondered if Emily hadn't abandoned me.
Maybe someone had forced her to disappear.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
One photo.
I opened it.
And the world stopped.
It was Emily.
Standing outside my company.
Taken earlier that day.
Underneath the photo was a message:
*"You need to know why she came back.""*
May you like
A second message appeared.
*"Because the person who destroyed your life is still standing beside you.""*
