Chapter 7: The Signature From a Day I Couldn’t Remember
The room went silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes right before something breaks.
I stared at the document sitting on my dining table.
My name was there.
My signature.
My life reduced to a few black lines on a piece of paper.
But the date underneath it made no sense.
I looked at Daniel Brooks.
“Read that again.””
The man adjusted his glasses.
“The transfer was completed on March 14th.””
My hands went cold.
March 14th.
I knew that date.
Everyone in this room knew that date.
Because March 14th was the day I collapsed in my driveway.
The day I was rushed to the hospital.
The day Ethan sat beside my bed while doctors fought to stabilize my heart.
I looked at my son.
His face had turned completely pale.
“Ethan.””
He swallowed.
“I remember.””
Emma stepped closer to the table.
“Dad was unconscious that entire day.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That is why I wanted to speak with Mr. Walker personally.””
Sophia’s confidence disappeared.
The first real crack in her mask appeared.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t believe I am.””
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
He opened his briefcase.
“I was the attorney who prepared the original documents.””
Everyone turned toward him.
“What?””
Sophia froze.
Daniel placed another folder on the table.
“The power of attorney agreement was submitted through my office.””
My heart sank.
“So you knew about this?””
“I knew someone submitted paperwork under your name.””
He looked at me.
“But I never met you.””
The room became still.
“Then why did you approve it?”” Emma asked.
“I didn’t.””
Daniel’s answer came quickly.
“That is why I came here.””
Sophia stepped forward.
“You’re supposed to represent us.””
Daniel looked at her coldly.
“I represent the person whose signature is legally valid.””
She laughed nervously.
“You’re making accusations.””
“No.””
He pointed to the document.
“I’m explaining facts.””
He pulled out a tablet.
“Mr. Walker, may I ask you something?””
“Yes.””
“On March 14th, were you capable of signing legal documents?””
I looked at Ethan.
Then Emma.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“According to hospital records, you were sedated and unconscious.””
Ethan whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Sophia immediately shook her head.
“This proves nothing.””
Emma looked at her.
“Actually, it proves everything.””
Sophia’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand legal matters.””
“No,” Emma replied.
“But I understand lying.””
Daniel opened another file.
“And there is another issue.””
I looked at him.
“What issue?””
“The signature.””
He turned the tablet around.
A comparison appeared on the screen.
My real signature.
And the one on the transfer papers.
Even I could see the difference.
The fake one looked close.
But not close enough.
Daniel tapped the screen.
“This signature was copied.””
Sophia went silent.
Ethan looked at his wife.
“You forged him.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Stop lying.””
Her eyes snapped toward him.
“You’re really choosing them?””
Ethan stared at her.
“They’re my family.””
The words hit her harder than anything else.
Because she finally understood.
She had lost control.
Daniel closed the folder.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What else?””
He hesitated.
Then he pulled out a photograph.
A photograph of a man standing outside a bank.
Sophia looked at it.
And her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Emma noticed.
“Who is that?””
Sophia didn’t answer.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is he?””
Daniel placed the photo down.
“This man was present when the transfer documents were notarized.””
Ethan looked confused.
“But Sophia said she handled everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“She did.””
Then he looked at Sophia.
“But she didn’t do it alone.””
My stomach tightened.
Someone else had been involved.
Someone who knew my house.
My finances.
My family.
Sophia suddenly grabbed the photo.
“Give me that.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice changed.
“You don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I understand enough.””
He pointed toward the photograph.
“This man is the reason I started questioning the paperwork.””
Emma leaned forward.
“Who is he?””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
And finally said:
“He’s someone your family knows very well.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“Who?””
Daniel placed another picture on the table.
And my heart stopped.
Because the man standing beside Sophia at the bank was someone I had trusted for years.
Someone who had eaten at my table.
May you like
Someone who had called me family.
My own brother-in-law.
