Chapter 11: The Secret Sophia Buried
Ethan didn’t move.
Neither did I.
The entire room waited.
For once, Sophia had no prepared speech.
No fake tears.
No clever explanation.
Just silence.
“Say it,” Ethan whispered.
She looked at him.
“I didn’t tell you everything.””
Emma let out a bitter laugh.
“That’s the understatement of the year.””
Sophia ignored her.
“Ethan, before we got married…”
She stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
She looked down.
“There was someone else.””
The words hit him.
Not because of the confession.
Because of the timing.
Because after everything, there was still more.
“I don’t understand,” Ethan said.
Sophia swallowed.
“Martin knew him.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Daniel knows.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“I suspected.””
Ethan stared.
“Suspected what?””
Daniel looked at Sophia.
“You were involved with Martin before marrying Ethan.””
Ethan stepped backward.
“No.””
Sophia’s eyes filled.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“You knew him before me?””
She nodded slowly.
“How long?””
“Six months.””
The answer broke something.
Ethan sat down.
I had never seen my son look so lost.
Not even when his mother died.
Because grief from losing someone is different from grief caused by discovering you never knew them.
“You married me because of my family,” he said.
Sophia shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation answered him.
Ethan looked away.
My heart hurt for him.
Despite everything.
Despite the slap.
Despite the betrayal.
He was still my son.
Sophia stepped closer.
“Ethan, I did love you.””
He looked at her.
“Did you?””
She froze.
That question destroyed her more than anger would have.
Because she didn’t know how to answer.
Emma walked toward Daniel.
“What exactly did Martin want?””
Daniel opened his folder.
“Your father’s assets.””
I looked at him.
“Why me?””
“Because Martin believed you had more than you showed.””
I almost laughed.
“He always thought I was hiding money.””
Daniel nodded.
“He studied your finances.””
“How?””
“Through Sophia.””
I looked at her.
She looked ashamed.
Finally.
“I only gave him basic information.””
Ethan stood.
“Basic?””
His voice trembled.
“You gave him my father’s private information.””
“I didn’t know what he planned.””
“But you helped him.””
Sophia couldn’t answer.
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“This is a partnership agreement.””
Emma picked it up.
“Between Sophia and Martin?””
“Yes.””
She read silently.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“What is it?””
She handed me the paper.
At the bottom were two names.
Sophia.
And Martin.
The agreement stated that if the house transfer succeeded, they would split the proceeds.
Ethan closed his eyes.
“She was going to sell it.””
Sophia whispered:
“I needed security.””
I stared at her.
“You were willing to destroy a family for security?””
She looked at me.
“I grew up without anything.””
“And I grew up believing family meant something.””
The words silenced her.
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His face changed.
“What now?”” Emma asked.
He turned the screen toward us.
A message from Martin.
I read it.
Everyone did.
It said:
“Your wife failed. Get out before Richard finds the second account.””
My blood ran cold.
Second account?
Emma looked at me.
“Dad?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what he means.””
Daniel suddenly looked concerned.
“Mr. Walker…”
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Your wife may have left more protections than just the house.””
I stared.
“What kind of protections?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“There was a hidden trust created years ago.””
Ethan frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t anyone know?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because your wife wanted it hidden.””
My heart started racing.
“What was in it?””
Daniel looked down at the papers.
May you like
Then he said:
“Everything Martin has been trying to find.””
