Chapter 6: The Inheritance She Never Expected

Nobody spoke.

The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the fireplace.

A clock my wife bought thirty years ago.

A clock that had survived every argument, every celebration, every goodbye.

And now it sat there quietly watching my family fall apart.

Ethan held the document.

“You were going to give me the house?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

His eyes filled.

“But Sophia said…”

“I know what she said.””

Emma took the paper from him.

“Dad wrote this two years ago.””

She read carefully.

“‘My children will always have a place in this home. Ethan will inherit the property, but only after ensuring his sister is protected as well.’”

She looked at Ethan.

“He wasn’t cutting you out.””

Ethan covered his face.

“He was taking care of us.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I didn’t want his guilt.

I wanted him to understand.

There is a difference.

Sophia stepped backward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“That document doesn’t matter.””

Emma stared.

“Why?””

“Because the house transfer is already in motion.””

My heart sank.

“What did you do?””

Sophia didn’t answer.

Ethan looked at her.

“What did you do?””

She reached for her purse.

“I did what I had to do.””

“You stole from my father.””

“I protected our future.””

“You lied about him attacking you.””

Her face hardened.

“I needed you to listen.””

“You hit him!””

“No.””

She pointed at him.

“You did.””

The words cut through him.

And I saw Ethan break.

Because that was the truth he had been avoiding.

Sophia had manipulated him.

But his hand had still been the one that struck me.

He looked at me.

“Dad…”

I looked away.

Not because I hated him.

Because I didn’t know how to forgive something that still hurt.

Sophia suddenly grabbed the folder.

“I’m leaving.””

Emma blocked the doorway.

“Not with those documents.””

Sophia laughed.

“You think you can stop me?””

“Yes.””

Emma held up her phone.

“I already sent copies to a lawyer.””

For the first time, Sophia looked genuinely afraid.

“You did what?””

“You heard me.””

Sophia’s confidence disappeared.

She had prepared for anger.

She had prepared for denial.

She had prepared for Ethan to choose her.

But she hadn’t prepared for evidence.

Ethan walked toward her.

“Is there anything else I don’t know?””

She stayed silent.

That silence answered him.

“Tell me.””

Still nothing.

“Tell me the truth for once.””

Sophia looked at him.

And then she said something I never expected.

“I never loved this family.””

The words shocked even Ethan.

She continued.

“I loved what this family had.””

The room became ice cold.

The house.

The money.

The security.

That was all we had been to her.

A resource.

Not people.

Ethan stepped back.

“I married you.””

“I know.””

“I defended you.””

“I know.””

“I hit my father because of you.””

She looked away.

“That was your choice.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

And I saw the moment he finally accepted what happened.

The person he trusted most had used him.

But before we could say anything else, someone knocked on the front door.

Everyone froze.

Emma looked confused.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The knock came again.

Three slow knocks.

Sophia’s face suddenly changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She whispered:

“They’re early.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who is early?””

She didn’t answer.

The door opened before anyone touched it.

A man in a dark suit stepped inside.

He held a briefcase.

And in his hand was a stack of legal documents.

“I’m here regarding the transfer of ownership.””

Ethan stared.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Sophia.

Then at me.

“My name is Daniel Brooks.””

He opened the folder.

“And I’m here because Mr. Richard Walker’s house has already been legally transferred.””

I felt the room spin.

Then Daniel placed the document on the table.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

May you like

But the date was impossible.

Because it was signed on a day when I was lying unconscious in the hospital.
