Chapter 10: The Warning My Wife Left Behind
“She knew about Martin.””
The words fell from my mouth.
Nobody moved.
Even Sophia looked surprised.
Not because she didn’t know who Martin was.
Because she didn’t expect me to know.
Ethan looked between us.
“Dad… what do you mean?””
I looked down at the letter again.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
My wife’s handwriting was still there.
Still familiar.
Still protecting me even after she was gone.
I read the final paragraph aloud.
“Richard, if you ever find yourself questioning someone’s intentions, pay attention to Martin. He has always been charming, but charm without honesty is dangerous.””
Emma covered her mouth.
“Mom wrote that?””
I nodded.
“But why?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mr. Walker, your wife contacted me eight years ago.””
I looked up.
“Eight years?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to unless there was a serious threat.””
I stared at him.
“What kind of threat?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“She believed Martin was manipulating family members for financial gain.””
The room became quiet again.
I thought back.
Eight years.
What happened eight years ago?
Then I remembered.
Martin had asked me to invest in one of his business ideas.
A restaurant.
He told me it was a guaranteed success.
He said family should help family.
I almost gave him money.
But my wife stopped me.
At the time, I thought she was being cautious.
Now I wondered how much she had seen that I hadn’t.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“She was more observant than most people realized.””
Sophia suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“You’re all acting like she was some genius who saw everything coming.””
Her smile was bitter.
“She wasn’t.””
Emma looked at her.
“Then why are you scared?””
Sophia’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Because Emma had found the truth.
Sophia wasn’t angry.
She was cornered.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Did Martin recruit you?””
Sophia looked at him.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she sighed.
“You wouldn’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I think I finally do.””
She looked away.
“He said you were too attached to your father.””
My jaw tightened.
“He said that?””
“He said you would never build your own life because you were always trying to save him.””
Ethan looked sick.
“He made you believe that?””
Sophia crossed her arms.
“He was right about one thing.””
“What?””
“You never stopped being his son.””
The words were cruel.
But they revealed something.
Sophia didn’t see family as love.
She saw it as competition.
She believed caring about someone meant losing something yourself.
Ethan shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
“No?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Because my father never asked me to choose between him and my life.””
That was the first time all night my son defended me.
Not because he felt guilty.
Because he finally understood.
Sophia looked at him with disappointment.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Ethan stared.
“No.””
He pointed toward the documents.
“The mistake was trusting you.””
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He turned the phone toward us.
“It’s the police.””
Everyone froze.
Sophia’s face went white.
“Why would the police call you?””
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Because the bank flagged the forged transfer documents.””
The room changed instantly.
The confidence disappeared from Sophia.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“They want to know whether Mr. Walker wants to press charges.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the floor.
Press charges.
Those words felt heavy.
Because this wasn’t some stranger.
This was someone who sat at my dinner table.
Someone who called me Dad.
Someone my son loved.
Emma touched my arm.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“What do you want to do?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because anger is easy.
Justice is harder.
Then Sophia spoke.
“Richard.””
I looked at her.
For the first time, she sounded afraid.
“Please.””
That single word surprised me.
Not because it was sincere.
Because it was the first time she realized she couldn’t control the outcome.
“I have children’s lives involved.””
I frowned.
“What children?””
She looked down.
And my heart stopped.
Ethan looked confused.
“What children?””
Sophia swallowed.
Then whispered:
“Mine.””
The room went silent.
Ethan stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Sophia looked at him.
And the fear in her eyes was different now.
Not fear of losing money.
Fear of losing something else.
“Ethan…”
May you like
She took a breath.
“There’s something you need to know.””
