Chapter 4: The House They Tried to Steal

The words echoed in my mind.

“Ownership transfer of the house.””

My house.

The place where I had buried my wife’s favorite flowers in the backyard.

The place where Ethan took his first steps.

The place where Emma cried after losing her first tooth.

The place where I had spent forty years paying every bill, fixing every broken pipe, and protecting every memory.

And somehow, my own son’s signature was sitting beside a fake version of mine on a document designed to take it away.

I looked at Ethan.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

His face was pale.

“I didn’t know what I signed.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He looked down.

“No, Dad.””

His voice cracked.

“It’s real.””

Emma immediately grabbed the phone from his hand.

“Let me see.””

She studied the photograph.

Her eyes moved across every line.

“This is a transfer agreement.””

She looked at Ethan.

“You signed this?””

“I thought it was a financial protection form.””

“You thought?””

Her voice rose.

“You thought signing a legal document without reading it was a good idea?””

Ethan flinched.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Emma held up the phone.

“Because if you knew, you would understand that someone was trying to steal our father’s home.””

I sat down slowly.

My body felt heavier than it ever had.

Not because I was old.

Because betrayal has a weight.

And I was carrying all of it.

Ethan crouched in front of me.

“Dad, I swear I never wanted this.””

I looked at him.

“Then what did you want?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the truth was probably worse.

He wanted an easier life.

He wanted to believe someone else would handle difficult decisions.

He wanted to trust Sophia because trusting her was easier than questioning her.

“I thought Sophia was helping us,” he finally said.

“Helping who?””

He looked away.

“That’s the problem.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Sophia stood there.

She wasn’t crying anymore.

She wasn’t pretending.

She walked inside calmly and closed the door behind her.

“I knew you would find out eventually.””

Emma stepped forward.

“You came back here?””

Sophia ignored her.

She looked at Ethan.

“You weren’t supposed to tell them.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You forged his signature.””

Sophia tilted her head.

“You’re upset because I didn’t explain the plan properly.””

“The plan?””

His voice shook.

“You call stealing my father’s house a plan?””

Sophia sighed.

“You’re being dramatic.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You tried to make your husband throw his own father out of his home.””

She looked at me.

“And you’re acting like you’re innocent?””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You’ve controlled Ethan his whole life.””

Emma stepped forward.

“Don’t rewrite history.””

Sophia laughed.

“Is that what you tell yourselves?””

She walked toward the living room.

“You both made him feel guilty for leaving.””

Ethan looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

She turned to him.

“Your father always needed you.””

“That’s not true.””

“Really?””

She pointed at me.

“He raised you alone. He reminded you every day how much he sacrificed.””

My jaw tightened.

“I never used my sacrifices against him.””

“Maybe not intentionally.””

Her words were poison.

Slow.

Careful.

Designed to make him question himself.

“You wanted him to stay the same little boy forever,” Sophia continued.

“But I wanted him to become his own man.””

Ethan stared at her.

“And your solution was stealing my father’s house?””

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

“You’re missing the bigger picture.””

“No.””

His voice became firmer.

“I’m finally seeing it.””

For the first time, Sophia looked nervous.

She had expected Ethan to defend her.

She had expected the same son who had slapped me.

But something had changed.

The recording had broken the spell.

She stepped closer to him.

“Ethan, think carefully.””

“I am.””

“If you walk away from me, you lose everything.””

Emma frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Sophia smiled.

Then she pulled a folder from her bag.

“I came prepared.””

My heart sank.

She placed the folder on the table.

Inside were copies of documents.

Bank statements.

Legal papers.

And photographs of my house.

She had been planning this for months.

Not days.

Months.

Ethan flipped through the pages.

Then he froze.

“What is this?””

Sophia didn’t answer.

Emma took the paper from him.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I stood.

“What did you find?””

Emma looked at me.

“Dad…”

Her voice became quiet.

“This isn’t just about the house.””

I stepped closer.

“What else?””

She turned the page.

And there it was.

A document with my name.

My account information.

And a transfer request.

A transfer request for every dollar I had saved for retirement.

Sophia watched us carefully.

Then she said the words that made my blood turn cold.

“The house was only the beginning.””
