Chapter 12: The Account My Wife Hid
I couldn’t speak.
Everything Martin had been trying to find.
The sentence followed me around the room.
“What did my wife hide?”” I asked.
Daniel placed the documents on the table.
“Before I explain, I need you to understand something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Your wife was not afraid of losing money.””
Emma frowned.
“Then what was she afraid of?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She was afraid someone would use money to control your family.””
I stared at the papers.
That sounded exactly like her.
My wife always believed money was useful.
But dangerous when people loved it more than they loved each other.
Daniel opened the file.
“Eight years ago, she created a private trust.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Eight years ago?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she believed Martin would eventually come after your assets.””
I sat down.
All these years.
She had been preparing for something I never saw coming.
“What was in the trust?””
Daniel turned the page.
“The majority of your retirement investments.””
I froze.
“What?””
Emma looked shocked.
“Dad, I thought your savings were in the bank.””
“Most people did.””
Daniel nodded.
“That was intentional.””
I looked at him.
“Why hide my own money from me?””
“You weren’t hiding it from yourself.””
He paused.
“You were hiding it from everyone else.””
The room went quiet.
And suddenly I understood.
My wife wasn’t keeping secrets from me.
She was protecting me.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“She knew Martin was dangerous.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Dad…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
The words were different this time.
Not rushed.
Not forced.
They carried pain.
Real pain.
I looked at my son.
“I know.””
He wiped his eyes.
“I don’t know how to fix this.””
I answered honestly.
“Neither do I.””
And for once, nobody pretended everything would be fine.
Because some wounds don’t disappear after an apology.
They need time.
Suddenly, there was another knock at the door.
Everyone froze.
Again.
But this time, I felt something different.
Not fear.
Awareness.
We knew now that every person who entered my house might bring another piece of the truth.
Emma moved toward the door.
“Should we open it?””
Daniel stopped her.
“Wait.””
He walked closer.
“Who is it?””
A voice answered.
A familiar voice.
“Richard.””
My blood ran cold.
Martin.
Ethan immediately stood.
“What is he doing here?””
Nobody knew.
Daniel looked through the window.
Then stepped back.
“He’s not alone.””
Emma frowned.
“Who is with him?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because whoever stood outside had changed everything.
The door opened slowly.
Martin stepped inside.
Older than I remembered.
But still wearing the same confident smile.
The same smile my wife had warned me about.
“Richard,” he said.
“I think we need to talk.””
Behind him stood a woman holding a folder.
A woman I recognized immediately.
My old bank manager.
The woman who handled my accounts for fifteen years.
And in her hands was another document.
Martin smiled.
“Because I have proof that everything Sophia did…”
He paused.
May you like
Then looked directly at me.
“Was actually following your instructions.””
