Chapter 9: The Woman Behind The Door

The hidden basement was colder than Natalie expected.

Not because of the air.

Because of what it contained.

Old photographs.

Medical files.

Handwritten notes.

Everything Daniel had spent years searching for was sitting inside a room beneath his own home.

He stared at the shelves.

“My father built this.””

Claire nodded.

“He built it to hide things.””

Daniel picked up a file.

“Things like this?””

The folder contained Lucas’s name.

Daniel opened it.

His hands froze.

Natalie watched his expression change.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Claire looked away.

“Read it.””

He did.

Slowly.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“She knew.””

Natalie stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“My wife knew someone was watching Lucas before he was born.””

The stranger smiled.

“And she knew you wouldn’t believe her.””

Daniel closed the file.

“Who was watching him?””

Nobody answered.

Then a sound came from deeper inside the basement.

A soft click.

Everyone turned.

There was another door.

Hidden behind the shelves.

Daniel walked toward it.

“Nobody knew about this.””

Claire whispered:

“She did.””

He opened it.

Inside was a small room.

A chair.

A table.

And a recording device.

Natalie felt her chest tighten.

She knew this room.

Not because she had seen it.

Because she remembered it.

She walked inside slowly.

On the table was a note.

Her name was written on it.

“Natalie.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Open it.””

Her fingers shook as she picked it up.

The handwriting was familiar.

Lucas’s mother.

The letter was short.

Natalie,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect him.

But I trusted you for a reason.

You are the only person who loved Lucas without knowing who he was.

Natalie stopped.

Her eyes filled.

Daniel read over her shoulder.

The letter continued.

Daniel will protect him with his strength.

But you will protect him with your heart.

A sound escaped Natalie.

A broken breath.

Lucas stepped closer.

“Is Mommy here?””

Natalie looked at him.

“I think she wanted to be.””

The stranger suddenly moved toward the table.

Daniel blocked him.

“You’re not touching anything.””

The man looked angry for the first time.

“You don’t understand what’s inside.””

Daniel stared.

“What are you afraid we’ll find?””

The stranger said nothing.

Then the recording device suddenly turned on.

Everyone froze.

A woman’s voice filled the room.

Daniel almost collapsed.

Because he knew that voice.

“Daniel.””

His wife.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Lucas’s eyes widened.

“Mommy?””

The recording continued.

“If you are hearing this, then Lucas is no longer safe.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Tears appeared before he could stop them.

The voice continued.

“I need you to know the truth.””

A pause.

Then:

“Lucas was never the target.””

Everyone waited.

The next sentence changed everything.

“The person they wanted was Natalie.””

Natalie felt the blood leave her face.

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

The recording continued.

“Because Natalie remembers what happened the night I disappeared.””

Natalie stepped backward.

“No.””

The voice spoke again.

“And because she knows the name of the person who betrayed us.””

The lights flickered.

The stranger suddenly looked toward the exit.

Too late.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew.””

The man didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You knew what the recording would say.””

The stranger smiled.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Everyone tensed.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out another photograph.

He threw it onto the table.

Natalie picked it up.

And her entire body froze.

The photograph showed the night Lucas was born.

Daniel looked at it.

Claire looked at it.

Everyone did.

But only Natalie noticed the impossible detail.

Because standing beside Lucas’s mother…

Was Natalie herself.

Holding the newborn baby.

May you like

And smiling.

As if she had always been his mother.
