Chapter 5: The Man Who Came For Lucas

The emergency lights flickered on.

Red shadows moved across the marble hallway.

Daniel stood in front of Lucas, his body completely blocking the child.

Natalie had never seen him like this.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Terrified.

“Who is he?”” Natalie whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Claire did.

“The man your wife was afraid of.””

Footsteps echoed from the first floor.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

A man walked into the hallway wearing a dark coat.

He looked ordinary.

That was the most frightening part.

No weapon.

No guards.

No panic.

Just a quiet smile.

“Daniel Brooks.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man smiled.

“You always say that.””

Lucas pressed against Natalie.

The stranger looked at him.

“There you are.””

Lucas immediately hid his face.

Natalie felt him shaking.

She stepped forward.

“Stay away from him.””

The man looked amused.

“You must be Natalie.””

Her heart stopped.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled.

“Because I’ve been waiting for you to remember.””

Daniel moved closer.

“You’re done.””

The man laughed softly.

“Are you sure?””

He looked around the mansion.

“After all these years, you still believe the story you created?””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“What story?””

“That your wife abandoned you.””

The words hit the room.

Natalie looked at Daniel.

The man continued.

“She didn’t leave because she hated you.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She left because she discovered what you were willing to do.””

Lucas looked up.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately looked down.

“No.””

But the doubt was already there.

The stranger noticed.

“Ask him.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Get out.””

“Ask him why your mother disappeared.””

Lucas covered his ears.

“Stop!””

Natalie knelt beside him.

“Lucas, look at me.””

The boy looked at her.

“Breathe.””

He tried.

The stranger watched them.

“You see?””

He smiled.

“He trusts her.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What do you want?””

The man’s expression changed.

The smile disappeared.

“I want what belongs to me.””

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?”” Natalie asked.

The man looked at Lucas.

“The boy.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Never.””

The man tilted his head.

“You don’t even know what he is.””

Natalie felt Lucas’s fingers tighten around hers.

“What is he?””

Nobody answered.

The stranger reached into his pocket.

Daniel immediately reacted.

But instead of a weapon, the man pulled out a small envelope.

He threw it onto the floor.

“This was written by Lucas’s mother.””

Daniel stared.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“She wanted you to read it after the truth came out.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“How do you have this?””

The stranger smiled.

“Because she gave it to me.””

Claire suddenly spoke.

“That’s a lie.””

Everyone looked at her.

Claire stepped forward.

“She would never give him anything.””

The stranger’s eyes moved toward her.

“Still protecting her?””

Claire’s face turned pale.

“You were there.””

Natalie looked confused.

“Who is he?””

Claire whispered:

“The man who destroyed your life.””

The stranger smiled.

“And the woman who helped hide the truth.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Claire?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

The stranger laughed.

“A mistake?””

He pointed at Natalie.

“You erased her memories.””

Natalie froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What did he just say?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Natalie stepped back.

“You took my memories?””

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

Natalie’s voice broke.

“You stole my life.””

Lucas looked between them, terrified.

The stranger smiled.

“Now everyone knows.””

Daniel picked up the envelope.

His hands were shaking.

He opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

One sentence written in his wife’s handwriting.

Daniel read it silently.

Then his face changed.

Natalie saw the fear return.

“What does it say?””

Daniel looked at Lucas.

Then at her.

And whispered:

“She said…”

He stopped.

The entire mansion waited.

Then Daniel finished:

“She said Lucas’s real father is not me.””
