Chapter 13: The Name Behind Everything

The darkness swallowed the basement.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

The gunshot echoed through the hidden room, followed by the sound of glass breaking somewhere above them.

Lucas screamed.

Daniel reacted instantly.

He pulled the boy against his chest and turned his own body between Lucas and the open doorway.

“Natalie, stay down.””

His voice was no longer the voice of a businessman.

It was the voice of a father.

Claire grabbed the old phone from the table.

“Nora?””

Only static answered.

Then the line went dead.

Natalie stood frozen.

The whisper from the darkness still rang in her ears.

You should have forgotten forever.

She knew that voice.

Not from the hospital.

Not from the night Lucas disappeared.

From before.

A memory buried so deeply that even she had forgotten it existed.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Security!””

No response.

The stranger, who had been standing near the wall, suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You finally understand.””

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“What?””

The man looked around the room.

“The person who wanted Lucas hidden was never outside this family.””

A cold silence followed.

Natalie stared at him.

“You knew.””

The man smiled.

“I knew enough.””

Claire stepped forward.

“You were involved.””

The stranger looked at her.

“I was hired.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“By who?””

The man said nothing.

Then footsteps approached from above.

Slow.

Calm.

Not rushed.

Someone who knew they already had control.

Daniel raised his voice.

“Show yourself.””

A figure appeared at the top of the basement stairs.

Natalie felt her blood run cold.

Because the person standing there was someone she recognized.

Someone who had been beside Daniel for years.

Someone trusted by everyone.

“Impossible.””

Daniel whispered.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Daniel stared.

“No.””

The stranger from the basement stepped aside.

The newcomer walked down the stairs.

Not with fear.

Not with hesitation.

Like he owned the mansion.

Lucas hid his face against Daniel.

Natalie looked at Daniel.

“Who is he?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

Because the truth was too painful.

Finally, he whispered:

“My father’s closest advisor.””

The man smiled.

“Former advisor.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You.””

The man looked around the room.

“I spent twenty years building this empire with your family.””

He looked at Lucas.

“And I watched you waste it all because of one woman.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You tried to take my son.””

“No.””

The man shook his head.

“I tried to remove a threat.””

Natalie’s anger rose.

“A five-year-old child is a threat?””

The man looked at her.

“You still don’t understand your role.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Explain.””

The man smiled.

“Natalie remembers everything.””

The room became silent.

Natalie felt everyone looking at her.

The man continued.

“She saw the documents. She heard the conversation. She knew who ordered the attack.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

The man’s smile disappeared.

“Me.””

Nobody spoke.

Even he seemed surprised by how easily he admitted it.

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“Why?””

“Because your wife found out.””

“Found out what?””

The man looked at Lucas.

“That your company was being used for something much bigger.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“Money. Power. Control.””

He shrugged.

“Your empire was useful.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family for business?””

The man laughed.

“No.””

He looked at Natalie.

“I destroyed your family because she refused to cooperate.””

Natalie froze.

“What?””

The man looked at her.

“You remember now, don’t you?””

The memory returned.

A hospital hallway.

Nora crying.

Natalie holding Lucas.

A man offering her money.

A warning.

And her answer.

“No.””

Natalie whispered:

“You threatened me.””

The man smiled.

“Yes.””

“You told me if I didn’t disappear…”

She stopped.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Natalie’s eyes filled.

“He threatened Lucas.””

The room changed.

Daniel moved toward the man.

But before he could reach him, the lights suddenly returned.

The hidden room was illuminated.

And on the table, the recording device turned on again.

Nora’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this…”

Everyone froze.

“I need you to know one more thing.””

The man’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Nora continued:

“He is not the only traitor.””

Daniel looked around.

“What?””

A pause.

Then Nora said:

“The person who helped him was someone you love.””

Everyone slowly turned.

Claire.

Her face went pale.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“Claire?””
