Chapter 14: The Choice She Made
Claire looked at Daniel.
And for the first time, she had no explanation.
No excuse.
No defense.
Only guilt.
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Tell me she’s wrong.””
Claire closed her eyes.
The silence answered before she did.
Lucas looked confused.
“Claire?””
The woman who had protected him for years looked at the child.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stepped back.
“You helped them.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what did you do?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I made one mistake.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“One mistake?””
He pointed around the hidden room.
“You erased Natalie’s memories.””
Claire looked at Natalie.
“I saved her.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
Daniel’s expression broke.
“You lied to everyone.””
Claire whispered:
“Because I was trying to fix what I helped create.””
Nobody spoke.
The man standing near the stairs smiled.
“Finally.””
Claire looked at him with hatred.
“You don’t get to speak.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What did you do?””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Three years ago, Nora discovered the truth about your company.””
Daniel nodded.
“And?””
“She asked me to help her escape.””
Natalie listened carefully.
“She knew they would follow.””
Claire nodded.
“She knew someone close to you was involved.””
Daniel looked at the man.
“But Claire helped him.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“I helped Nora disappear.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Claire looked at him.
“She wasn’t kidnapped.””
The words changed everything.
“She chose to leave.””
Lucas looked at her.
“Mommy left?””
Claire immediately knelt.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“She left because she loved you.””
Lucas stared.
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Claire looked away.
“Because she was afraid.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Afraid of me?””
Claire hesitated.
Daniel understood.
The pain was worse because it was possible.
“No.””
Claire answered.
“She was afraid of what would happen if you knew the truth.””
The man interrupted.
“You always were too emotional.””
Claire looked at him.
“And you always underestimated love.””
He smiled.
“Love is why she lost.””
Daniel moved.
But Natalie stopped him.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the old recording device.
“There’s something else.””
She remembered.
Another hidden moment.
Another conversation.
A sentence Nora had whispered.
Natalie walked toward the table.
“She told me something before my memory was erased.””
Daniel watched.
“What?””
Natalie touched the device.
“She said if anything happened…”
Her voice trembled.
“She said Lucas would need both of us.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Both of us?””
Natalie nodded.
“You and me.””
The words affected him.
Because after three years of believing he had lost everything, he finally understood.
Nora never wanted Lucas to choose between them.
She wanted them to protect him together.
Suddenly, the old phone rang again.
Everyone froze.
Daniel answered.
“Nora?””
This time, the voice was clearer.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Close.””
Natalie stepped forward.
“Nora, why did you warn us about me?””
Silence.
Then Nora answered:
“Because I didn’t know if you were still the same person.””
Natalie felt hurt.
“But I am.””
“I know now.””
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Nora whispered:
“It means she remembered.””
The man near the stairs suddenly turned.
“What?””
Nora continued:
“And she remembered the one thing we never wanted him to know.””
Everyone looked at Natalie.
She felt it.
The memory.
The missing piece.
The reason she had been targeted.
Then Nora said:
“Natalie remembers where I hid the evidence.””
The man moved instantly.
Daniel noticed.
“Stop him!””
But it was too late.
The man grabbed Lucas.
Everything happened in a second.
Daniel lunged forward.
Natalie screamed.
Claire reached out.
And Lucas looked at Natalie with terrified eyes.
“Please…”
Natalie froze.
May you like
Because the boy wasn’t asking her to save him.
He was asking her to remember.
