Chapter 2: The Hidden Photograph
Daniel Brooks had faced enemies with guns pointed at his head.
He had walked into meetings where everyone in the room wanted him destroyed.
He had never shown fear.
But the photograph in his hand made him forget how to breathe.
Natalie noticed immediately.
“What is it?””
Daniel did not answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the faded image.
Lucas watched him carefully.
The boy knew.
He always knew when adults were hiding something.
Daniel slowly turned the photograph around.
It showed a younger woman standing outside the Brooks mansion.
Lucas’s mother.
Beside her was another person.
A woman Natalie had never seen before.
But Daniel recognized her instantly.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“Where did you get this?””
Lucas looked down.
“Mommy gave it to me.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“When?””
The boy shrugged.
“Before she left.””
Natalie looked between them.
“Daniel…”
He ignored her.
“Lucas, why did you hide this?””
The child hesitated.
“Because you would take it.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Lucas hugged himself.
“You always take things away when you’re angry.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Natalie watched the man carefully.
For the first time since she arrived at the mansion, she saw something other than power.
She saw regret.
Lucas stepped closer to Natalie.
“Are you still leaving?””
She looked down at him.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel immediately looked at her.
“Natalie.””
She raised a hand.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“But this boy just attacked me because he was scared. Not because he hated me.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand him.””
“Then explain him.””
Silence.
Daniel looked away.
That was the answer.
Natalie slowly walked toward the broken bronze horse.
“This wasn’t about the statue.””
She picked up a small piece of dust from the floor.
“It wasn’t about me either.””
Lucas watched her.
She turned toward him.
“What happened before you threw it?””
The boy became still.
His eyes moved toward the staircase.
“I heard voices.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What voices?””
Lucas whispered.
“Your voice.””
The room went quiet.
“And Mommy’s.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Lucas shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became smaller.
“She was here.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Lucas, your mother has been gone for three years.””
The boy covered his ears.
“She was here!””
The scream echoed through the hallway.
Natalie immediately crouched beside him.
“Lucas.””
He grabbed her hand.
“She said you were dangerous.””
Daniel stopped.
Natalie looked up.
“Who said that?””
Lucas stared at Daniel.
“Mommy.””
The air changed.
Daniel’s expression became unreadable.
Because that sentence created a crack in a story he had spent years believing.
His wife had not simply left.
She had been afraid.
But of whom?
Natalie gently squeezed Lucas’s hand.
“Can you tell me what she said?””
Lucas looked terrified.
“She told me…”
His voice dropped.
“She told me never to trust my father.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Natalie, leave.””
She looked at him.
“No.””
The single word surprised everyone.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You don’t know what you’re involving yourself in.””
Natalie looked at Lucas.
Then back at him.
“I know exactly what I’m involving myself in.””
She glanced at the frightened child.
“A little boy who thinks everyone he loves disappears.””
Daniel said nothing.
Then Lucas suddenly pointed toward the staircase.
His face turned pale.
“She’s here.””
Natalie slowly turned.
The mansion entrance was locked.
The security system showed nobody had entered.
But from the second floor…
A door creaked open.
Daniel’s expression changed instantly.
Because there was only one room upstairs that nobody had entered since his wife vanished.

And from inside that room, a voice whispered:
“Daniel.””
