Chapter 7: The Memory She Was Never Supposed To Find

Natalie could not breathe.

The hallway around her disappeared.

The marble floor.

The frightened guards.

Daniel standing protectively beside Lucas.

All of it faded behind one image.

A hospital room.

Bright white lights.

A baby crying.

And a woman’s voice whispering her name.

“Natalie…”

She grabbed the edge of the table beside her.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“What did you remember?””

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the stranger.

“You were there.””

The man smiled faintly.

“Yes.””

Natalie’s hands trembled.

“The hospital.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire lowered her eyes.

She already knew.

“You remember now.””

Natalie turned toward her.

“You knew?””

Claire looked devastated.

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces?””

Natalie’s voice cracked.

“You erased my life.””

“I saved it.””

“No.””

Natalie shook her head.

“You stole it.””

Lucas looked between them.

“Why is everyone talking like I’m not here?””

The sentence broke the tension.

Natalie immediately looked at him.

Because despite everything happening around them, Lucas was still just a child.

A child who had thrown a bronze horse because he was terrified of losing another person.

She walked toward him.

“Lucas.””

He looked away.

“Are you leaving too?””

The question stopped her.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Lucas looked back.

Natalie knelt.

“I don’t know everything yet.””

She glanced at Daniel.

“I don’t understand why people lied.””

Then she looked at Lucas.

“But I know one thing.””

She held his hand.

“I’m not walking away from you.””

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

The stranger watched silently.

Daniel noticed.

“You’re enjoying this.””

The man looked at him.

“No.””

He glanced at Lucas.

“I’m remembering.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Remembering what?””

The stranger’s smile faded.

“The night your wife begged you to listen.””

Daniel froze.

“I never saw her.””

“That’s because you were too busy believing everyone around you.””

The words struck deeper than expected.

Natalie looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And his silence was enough.

Claire stepped forward.

“Natalie, you need to understand.””

Natalie turned.

“I need to understand why you changed my memories.””

Claire swallowed.

“Because you were the only witness.””

“To what?””

Claire looked at Lucas.

“To what happened the night he was born.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stared.

“Lucas was born in a hospital. That’s all I know.””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“That’s all you were told.””

The stranger looked at Natalie.

“Tell them.””

Natalie closed her eyes.

She tried to reach the memory.

At first, there was nothing.

Then pain.

A cold floor.

A woman crying.

Lucas’s mother.

She was holding a newborn baby.

And Natalie was standing beside her.

“You have to take him.””

Natalie heard the words.

Her own voice.

“No. I can’t.””

The memory shifted.

A man entered the room.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone angry.

The stranger.

Natalie opened her eyes.

“I saw you.””

The man said nothing.

“You came into the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“You threatened her.””

His face remained calm.

“She knew what she had.””

Natalie stepped back.

“She knew Lucas was valuable.””

The stranger smiled.

“Now you understand.””

Daniel moved closer.

“What was valuable about my son?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lucas spoke.

“Why did Mommy hide me?””

Everyone turned.

The little boy stood there, tears running down his face.

“Was I bad?””

Natalie’s heart broke.

“No.””

She immediately hugged him.

“You were never bad.””

“But everyone leaves.””

“No.””

She held him tighter.

“Not everyone.””

Daniel looked away.

For years, he had built an empire because he thought power could protect his family.

But his son had not needed power.

He had needed someone to stay.

Suddenly, Claire’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

Claire didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

Then a message appeared.

Her hands began shaking.

Natalie saw fear in her eyes.

“What does it say?””

Claire slowly turned the screen around.

Only four words were displayed.

“HE KNOWS THE LOCATION.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Lucas.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your wife.””
