Chapter 15: The Promise That Saved Them

Natalie closed her eyes.

The world became silent.

The fear.

The shouting.

The footsteps.

Everything disappeared.

Only Lucas remained.

And the promise.

A promise made three years ago.

A promise she had forgotten.

She saw the hospital room again.

Nora lying weakly on the bed.

A newborn Lucas crying.

Natalie holding him.

“You can’t do this alone.””

Nora smiled sadly.

“I won’t be there.””

“Don’t say that.””

“You have to promise me something.””

Natalie looked down at the baby.

“What?””

Nora touched Lucas’s tiny hand.

“If he ever feels alone…”

Her voice broke.

“Remind him he was loved.””

The memory ended.

Natalie opened her eyes.

And she knew.

She knew exactly where the evidence was.

Not in the mansion.

Not in the hidden room.

Not inside Lucas.

She looked at the man holding the child.

“You want the evidence?””

The man smiled.

“Yes.””

Natalie stepped forward.

“Then take me.””

Daniel immediately turned.

“No.””

Natalie looked at him.

“Trust me.””

The words surprised him.

Because three years ago, he had lost trust.

Now, he had to choose whether to give it.

The man laughed.

“You think you can negotiate?””

Natalie nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at Lucas.

“You don’t want him.””

The man frowned.

“What?””

“You want what he knows.””

Silence.

Natalie continued.

“And I know where it is.””

The man’s grip loosened slightly.

Daniel noticed.

Claire noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The man wanted the evidence.

Not the child.

Natalie slowly stepped closer.

“Let Lucas go.””

The man smiled.

“And why would I?””

“Because you already lost.””

His expression changed.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.””

Natalie looked toward the old phone.

“Nora recorded everything.””

The man froze.

“You think one recording matters?””

“No.””

Natalie smiled faintly.

“Not one.””

She looked at Claire.

“Open the files.””

Claire understood.

She rushed to the table.

Inside the hidden room were dozens of recordings.

Documents.

Proof.

Everything.

The man’s face changed.

Daniel saw it.

“You thought you destroyed everything.””

The man stepped backward.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“I understand enough.””

Security finally arrived.

This time, Daniel didn’t stop them.

The man looked at Natalie.

“You ruined everything.””

Natalie looked at Lucas.

“No.””

She walked toward the child.

“You did that yourself.””

The man was taken away.

But nobody celebrated.

Because one question remained.

Nora.

Daniel kept the phone close.

“Nora?””

The line was quiet.

Then:

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Where are you?””

A long pause.

“Outside.””

Everyone turned.

The basement door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Lucas froze.

Then whispered:

“Mommy?””

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

“Lucas.””

The boy ran.

Daniel stood still.

He had imagined this moment for years.

But now that it arrived, he didn’t know what to do.

Nora looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I should have listened.””

Nora cried.

And for the first time in three years, the Brooks mansion was not filled with fear.

It was filled with a family finding its way back.

Later that night, Natalie stood alone in the hallway.

The same hallway where a bronze horse had once fallen.

Where a frightened little boy had attacked her.

Where everything had begun.

Lucas walked toward her.

“Are you leaving?””

Natalie smiled softly.

“I don’t know.””

Lucas looked down.

Then he grabbed her hand.

“Don’t.””

She looked at him.

“Why?””

The boy answered simply:

“Because you promised.””

Natalie smiled through tears.

“Yes.””

She squeezed his hand.

“I did.””

And this time, she remembered the promise.

She remembered everything.

But there was one thing nobody in the mansion knew.

When Natalie found the final hidden file from Nora…

There was a single sentence written inside.

A warning about Lucas’s future.

A warning that said:

“Protect him until his sixth birthday.””

May you like

Because the danger was never over.

It was only waiting.
