Chapter 8: The Test She Hid
I left the ballroom without saying goodbye.
I didn’t care about the engagement party anymore.
I didn’t care about the guests.
I didn’t care about the decorations, the music, or the life everyone thought I had.
All I cared about was finding the truth.
Claire followed me into the hallway.
“Daniel, please wait.””
I kept walking.
“Please.””
Her voice broke.
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because a part of me still loved her.
I turned around.
“Tell me about the DNA test.””
Her face went pale.
“I can explain.””
“That isn’t an answer.””
She looked down.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
“Then how did you want me to find out?””
She had no response.
That hurt more than anything.
“Was it mine?””
The hallway was empty.
No family.
No guests.
No witnesses.
Just us.
The way it should have been from the beginning.
Claire whispered:
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did Vanessa say it wasn’t?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“Because she doesn’t know everything.””
I felt a small piece of hope.
Then she continued.
“But there was a test.””
My stomach dropped.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because something happened.””
“What?””
Claire looked at her hands.
“I started having complications.””
My expression softened for a second.
Then I remembered everything else.
“And?””
“The doctors wanted more information.””
“About the baby?””
She nodded.
“They asked about family history.””
I waited.
“And that’s when I realized…”
She stopped.
“Realized what?””
Claire looked at me.
“That I didn’t know if you were the father.””
The words cut deeper because they came from her.
Not Vanessa.
Not my mother.
Her.
My wife.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No. I mean—I knew there was no one else.””
“Then why test?””
“Because of Vanessa.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everything comes back to Vanessa.””
Claire stepped closer.
“She told me something.””
“What?””
“That Michael wasn’t Noah’s father.””
“I know.””
“But she also told me something else.””
I waited.
“She said she had been with someone else before him.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“She didn’t know if Noah was yours.””
The hallway felt like it was shrinking.
I looked away.
I couldn’t watch her face anymore.
“So the test was for Noah?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That silence returned.
The same silence that had destroyed everything.
“Claire.””
She whispered:
“Noah is your son.””
I looked at her.
“Then what was the secret?””
Her phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The name on the screen was visible.
Vanessa.
I reached for it.
Claire pulled it back.
“Don’t.””
“Why?””
“Because she’s trying to manipulate you.””
“Answer it.””
She hesitated.
Then she did.
“Hello?””
Vanessa’s voice came through.
Even I could hear it.
“Did you tell him?””
Claire looked at me.
“What?””
Vanessa continued:
“Did you tell Daniel about the second DNA test?””
Claire froze.
My heart sank.
“What second test?””
Vanessa was silent.
Then she said:
“The one that proves Claire’s baby isn’t yours.””
Claire hung up.
Too late.
I had heard enough.
I looked at my wife.
“There was another test?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“There was another test.””
She didn’t deny it.
I stepped back.
“Who is the father?””
Claire covered her face.
“I don’t know.””
Those four words destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
I walked away.
Behind me, Claire cried my name.
But I didn’t stop.

Because for the first time in years…
I didn’t know who I was married to.
