The Baby Wasn't Real / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Last Secret

I took the document from Michael’s hand.

I expected lies.

Manipulation.

Another trick.

But the paper looked real.

Too real.

The name at the bottom stared back at me.

Daniel Carter.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Michael smiled.

“Something Claire hoped you would never see.””

I wanted to punch him.

I wanted to believe he was the villain.

Because villains were easier.

They didn’t hurt like betrayal did.

“Why are you showing me this?””

“Because I’m the only person who has been honest with you.””

I laughed.

“You faked your death.””

“Yes.””

“You watched my family.””

“Yes.””

“You threatened people.””

“Yes.””

He said it all so calmly.

Like he was admitting he had forgotten to return a phone call.

“You’re insane.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I’m someone who lost everything because people like Claire and Vanessa made choices without telling the truth.””

I looked at the document again.

“What does this prove?””

Michael pointed.

“Read the date.””

I did.

My hands froze.

The date was before Claire and I met.

Before our relationship.

Before our marriage.

“What am I looking at?””

Michael’s voice lowered.

“The original agreement.””

“Agreement?””

“Between Claire and Vanessa.””

My eyes moved across the page.

Then I saw it.

Claire’s signature.

Vanessa’s signature.

My stomach dropped.

“What did they agree to?””

Michael smiled.

“That Claire would get close to you.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa needed protection.””

“From you?””

His smile disappeared.

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“From someone else.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Michael looked toward the door.

Before he could answer, footsteps echoed.

Someone else entered.

Vanessa.

Her face went pale when she saw Michael.

“You found him.””

Michael smiled.

“I knew you would come.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

She stopped.

I held up the document.

“Is this real?””

Her silence answered.

“You signed this.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was desperate.””

“For what?””

“To keep Noah safe.””

I looked at Claire’s name.

“And Claire?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She agreed to help.””

“So my entire marriage…”

“No.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I didn’t move.

“She did fall in love with you.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

Michael laughed.

“That’s exactly what they wanted.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

“They wanted you confused.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Stop.””

But Michael continued.

“Because when people are confused, they don’t ask questions.””

I looked at him.

“You’re enjoying this.””

“No.””

His face became serious.

“I’m trying to stop them from doing the same thing again.””

“What thing?””

He pointed at the document.

“Changing a child’s identity.””

The room went quiet.

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Your wife’s baby isn’t mine.””

I stared.

“But the DNA test—”

“Was altered.””

Silence.

A horrible, impossible silence.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Michael looked at her.

“You know I’m right.””

I looked between them.

“Who is the father?””

Nobody answered.

Then the warehouse door opened.

Claire walked in.

I froze.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

Michael stepped back.

“Finally.””

Claire held a small envelope.

“I found the original test.””

My heart pounded.

She walked toward me.

“I hid it because I was afraid.””

I didn’t take it.

“What does it say?””

Claire looked at me.

And whispered:

“The baby is yours.””

Nobody moved.

My entire body went numb.

“What?””

Claire cried.

“The test I showed you was fake.””

Michael’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Who made it?””

Claire looked at him.

“Michael.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the man who had spent days destroying my life.

The man who claimed everyone else was lying.

“You changed the results.””

Michael didn’t answer.

Claire stepped closer.

“He wanted me to believe the baby wasn’t yours.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because he wanted me to leave you.””

I looked at Michael.

“Why?””

He stared at me.

Then smiled.

And his answer was something I never expected.

“Because Daniel…”

May you like

A pause.

“Your baby is the only thing standing between me and everything I want.””
