Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Inside the black bag was a stack of medical papers.

For one second, relief washed over me.

No red ball.

No fake pregnancy device.

No impossible explanation.

Just papers.

Then I saw the name at the top.

And my relief disappeared.

The documents were not Claire’s.

They belonged to someone named Vanessa Miller.

I looked back at my wife.

“Who is Vanessa?””

Claire didn’t answer.

The silence was louder than anything anyone could have said.

Emily stepped into the doorway.

“Daniel?””

I turned the papers over.

There were hospital records.

Appointment dates.

Insurance information.

And one phrase appeared again and again.

Pregnancy complications.

My hands started shaking.

“Claire.””

She looked away.

“Tell me who she is.””

Nobody in the hallway moved.

Finally, Claire whispered:

“She’s my sister.””

I blinked.

“You don’t have a sister.””

“Yes, I do.””

The words came out broken.

“I had a sister.””

A chill moved through me.

“Had?””

Claire sat down on the small bench outside the restroom.

For the first time all night, she looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“Her name was Vanessa. She was younger than me.””

She looked at the papers.

“She was pregnant last year.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Claire looked up.

“You knew?””

Rachel looked away.

That was another surprise.

Another crack in a story I thought I understood.

Claire continued.

“She lost the baby.””

The room became quiet.

“She blamed herself. She blamed everyone. She stopped talking to people.””

I stared at the documents.

“Then why do you have her medical records?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to help her.””

“By hiding them?””

She didn’t answer.

I felt anger rising.

Not because she was helping her sister.

Because she had kept a secret this big from me.

“You told me we were having a baby.””

Her lips trembled.

“We are.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire looked directly at me.

“I am pregnant.””

Everyone exhaled.

The tension changed.

But it didn’t disappear.

“Then what was under your dress?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I’ll explain.””

She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

Her fingers moved quickly.

Then she showed me a photo.

It was an ultrasound image.

Not the one I had seen before.

A different one.

A recent one.

The baby looked real.

Alive.

My confusion only grew.

“Then why did Sophie say she saw you put something there?””

Claire looked toward the little girl.

Sophie was still standing beside her mother.

Claire’s expression softened.

“Because she did see something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Five minutes before Sophie saw me, Vanessa called me.””

The name hung in the air.

“She was crying.””

Claire looked down.

“She said someone had stolen her medical records.””

I looked at the papers in my hand.

“And?””

“And she asked me to hide them.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Claire looked toward the restroom mirror.

“Because someone at this party was trying to find them.””

A cold silence spread through the hallway.

“Who?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

Then Sophie spoke.

A tiny voice.

A voice everyone had forgotten was still listening.

“I know.””

We all turned.

Sophie looked at the crowd.

Her face had gone pale.

“I saw the person who took them.””

Rachel knelt down.

“Sophie, sweetheart, don’t say things if you’re scared.””

But Sophie shook her head.

“I’m not scared.””

She pointed past us.

Toward the ballroom entrance.

Everyone followed her finger.

Standing there was someone who had not been in the room five minutes earlier.

Someone holding a familiar black bag.

Sophie whispered the name.

And when I heard it, my blood went cold.

May you like

Because the person she had seen wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from my own family.
