Chapter 6: The Man In The Photograph
I couldn’t move.
The photo stayed on my screen.
Claire.
A newborn baby.
And another man.
The worst part wasn’t the picture itself.
It was Claire’s expression.
She wasn’t scared.
She wasn’t confused.
She looked happy.
Like she belonged there.
“Daniel?””
Claire’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
She immediately saw my face.
“What happened?””
I turned my phone toward her.
The moment she saw the image, all the color disappeared from her face.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer the question.””
Her lips parted.
No words came out.
That was enough.
The room exploded with whispers.
Emily stepped closer.
“Claire?””
My wife looked around.
Everyone was watching.
But she only looked at me.
“Daniel, please let me explain.””
I held up the phone.
“Who is he?””
She closed her eyes.
The tears came faster now.
“His name was Michael.””
“Was?””
“He’s dead.””
That stopped me.
For a second, I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger.
Confusion.
Betrayal.
Everything mixed together.
“When was this taken?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“When?””
“Four years ago.””
The number hit me.
Four years.
The same age as the child in the picture.
My hands went cold.
“You knew Vanessa had a baby four years ago.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew I was the father.””
“Yes.””
“And this man?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“Michael was Vanessa’s fiancé.””
I stared at her.
“So he thought that baby was his.””
Claire nodded.
“And you knew.””
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because Vanessa asked me to keep the secret.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“Everyone keeps asking me to understand.””
I looked at my mother.
“At what point does someone understand me?””
Nobody answered.
Claire moved closer.
“Daniel, please.””
I stepped away.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But it hurt more than shouting.
“I need the truth.””
She wiped her tears.
“You deserve it.””
Finally.
Those words.
The ones I had been waiting for all night.
Claire took a breath.
“Vanessa and Michael were supposed to get married.””
She looked at the photo.
“But when Noah was born, Michael found out he wasn’t the biological father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“He took a DNA test.””
My heart stopped.
“And?””
Claire looked at me.
“The results showed you were Noah’s father.””
The room became silent again.
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Claire’s voice became barely a whisper.
“Because Michael threatened Vanessa.””
My mother stepped in.
“He said he would take Noah away.””
I looked at her.
“And you believed him?””
“We were afraid.””
“For what?””
My mother looked down.
“For what he might do.””
I looked back at the photo.
The man holding the baby.
The man everyone had been afraid of.
“But he’s dead now.””
Claire nodded.
“He died two years ago.””
“Then why keep hiding this?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Sophie’s small voice came from behind Rachel.
“Because someone still wants the baby.””
Everyone turned.
Rachel looked confused.
“Sophie, sweetheart…”
But Sophie stared at Claire.
“I heard them talking.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
Sophie pointed toward the black bag.
“The lady who took the papers.””
I looked around the room.
“What lady?””
Sophie’s eyes moved slowly.
Then she pointed at someone standing near the entrance.
Someone I hadn’t noticed before.
Someone who had been quietly watching everything.
A woman wearing a black dress.
Claire gasped.
“No.””
My mother whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The woman smiled.
And then she said:
“Hello, Daniel.””
I felt every muscle in my body freeze.
Because I recognized her.
She was in the photograph.
Standing beside Claire.
Standing beside Michael.
Standing beside newborn Noah.
But everyone had told me she was gone.
Dead.
The woman took one step forward.
“I think it’s time you met your real family.””
May you like
And then Claire whispered the name I never expected to hear.
“Vanessa.””
