Chapter 12: The Father Nobody Expected
The name on my phone stayed there.
I read it three times.
Hoping my eyes were wrong.
Hoping my mind was playing tricks on me.
But it wasn’t.
The father of Claire’s baby was:
Michael Carter.
My hands went numb.
That was impossible.
Michael was dead.
I looked at Claire.
She knew.
The second she saw my face, she knew Vanessa had told me.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Daniel…”
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I didn’t know how.””
My anger exploded.
“How?””
I threw the DNA paper onto the table.
“Michael died two years ago.””
Claire covered her face.
“I know.””
“Then how is he the father of your baby?””
She couldn’t answer.
And that silence was the final betrayal.
I walked out.
I didn’t even know where I was going.
I just needed air.
I needed distance.
I needed a moment where nobody was lying to me.
Vanessa was waiting outside.
“You know.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
She handed me another folder.
“Michael wasn’t dead when everyone thought he was.””
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
A hospital discharge record.
A man with a different name.
Different identity.
But the same face.
“He faked his death.””
My stomach turned.
“Why?””
“To disappear.””
“From who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“From everyone.””
I flipped through the papers.
Then I saw the date.
The day Claire found out she was pregnant.
I looked at Vanessa.
“She was with him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Because Claire wasn’t only hiding your son.””
A pause.
“She was hiding Michael.””
The pieces started connecting.
The secret pregnancy.
The missing records.
The fear.
The lies.
Claire hadn’t just been protecting someone.
She had been protecting a ghost.
“Where is he?””
Vanessa looked toward the street.
“I don’t know.””
“But you found this.””
“I found evidence.””
She handed me another photo.
A recent one.
A man standing outside a building.
Alive.
Watching.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the building.
It was my office.
“He’s been watching you.””
I stared at the picture.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice became quiet.
“Because he believes Noah belongs to him.””
A car engine suddenly roared nearby.
We turned.
A black SUV sped past the house.
Too fast.
Too intentional.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked back.
“What?””
“Don’t go home.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Her face changed.
“Because if Michael knows you found out…”
A loud crash interrupted her.
We both turned.
The front window of Claire’s apartment shattered.
Everyone froze.
A small object rolled across the floor.
A rock.
Attached to it was a note.
I walked toward it slowly.
Vanessa grabbed my shoulder.
“Don’t touch it.””
But I already had.
The note had only one sentence.
Written in black ink.
*You should have left my family alone.*
I looked at Claire.
She was standing in the doorway.
Pale.
Terrified.
And for the first time, I realized something.
She wasn’t afraid of losing me.
She was afraid of what would happen if Michael found me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a man whispered:
“Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“The man whose child your wife is carrying.””
The call ended.
May you like
And somewhere in the distance…
a car door slammed.
