The Baby Wasn't Real / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Name On The Birth Record

I stared at my phone long after the call disconnected.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone was waiting for me to say something.

But I couldn’t.

My mind was stuck on one sentence.

Claire was never supposed to be your wife.

I looked at my wife.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“Who was that?”” Emily asked.

I didn’t answer.

My mother already knew.

That scared me more.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Mom, who was that?””

Her silence was unbearable.

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, please let me explain.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my entire life suddenly felt unreal.

“Explain what?””

My voice cracked.

“That my mother knew about another child?””

Claire swallowed.

“That she was trying to protect you?””

“That you knew I had a child with another woman?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But you knew eventually.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed.””

The pain on her face almost made me stop.

Almost.

But I needed answers.

“How long?””

Claire whispered:

“Seven months.””

The number hit me.

Seven months.

Seven months of dinners.

Seven months of talking about baby names.

Seven months of me believing I knew everything about the woman beside me.

“You were going to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That hurt more than a lie.

Because it was honest.

My mother stepped closer.

“Daniel, you need to understand—”

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“No more protecting me.””

My mother stopped.

“I’m not a child.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew it was true.

I walked toward the table where my mother had placed the bag.

Inside were more papers.

I pulled them out.

The first page was a hospital record.

The second was a birth certificate.

My hands froze.

Because my name was there.

Father.

Daniel Carter.

The mother’s name was Vanessa Miller.

And the child’s name was Noah.

A son.

I had a son.

I sat down.

I don’t remember choosing to sit.

My body just gave up.

Claire came closer.

“Daniel…”

I looked up.

“Did you ever meet him?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

And I knew.

“You did.””

She looked away.

“When?””

“After he was born.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa asked me to.””

I stood again.

“You met my son before I did?””

The tears finally fell from her eyes.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You don’t get to say that.””

My voice echoed.

“You don’t get to hold my child and then decide I shouldn’t know he exists.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She looked at my mother.

Then back at me.

“From Vanessa.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Claire took a shaking breath.

“She wasn’t stable.””

My mother nodded.

“She was obsessed.””

I looked at the two women.

“So you both decided she was the problem?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me enough.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where are you going?”” Claire asked.

I looked at her.

“To meet my son.””

Her face broke.

“Daniel, wait.””

But I was already walking.

Until my phone buzzed again.

This time it wasn’t a call.

It was a message.

From Vanessa.

There was a photo attached.

I opened it.

A little boy was sitting on a couch, holding a toy airplane.

He looked about four years old.

Just like Sophie.

Under the picture were five words:

*He has been waiting for you.*

Then another message appeared.

*But before you come, you need to know why Claire married you.*

I stared at the screen.

My heart sank.

Because the next photo loaded automatically.

It was a picture of Claire.

Standing outside a hospital room.

Holding a newborn baby.

May you like

And beside her was a man I recognized.

A man who was not me.
