The Baby Wasn't Real / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Man Who Never Left

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same things.

Claire standing in the hospital.

My mother holding secrets.

Vanessa begging me to listen.

And Michael.

A dead man who wasn’t dead.

A man who had been watching my life from the shadows.

By morning, the police had arrived at Claire’s apartment.

The broken window was being examined.

The note had been collected.

But the words were still burned into my mind.

*You should have left my family alone.*

I sat on the couch while an officer spoke with Claire.

She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

Not like the confident woman who walked into every room and commanded attention.

Just someone who was exhausted from carrying too many secrets.

When the officer left, I looked at her.

“You knew he was alive.””

Claire didn’t deny it.

“I suspected.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She closed her eyes.

“I saw him once.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Two months after his supposed death.””

The room went silent.

“You saw him.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stood.

“Stop saying that.””

She flinched.

“I’m serious, Claire. Every lie you told started with those words.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“I saw Michael outside the hospital.””

My heart started racing.

“What hospital?””

“The one where Vanessa was staying after Noah was born.””

I stared.

“You went back?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I felt guilty.””

That surprised me.

“Guilty for what?””

She took a deep breath.

“When I found the DNA results, I was scared.””

“Because you knew Noah was mine?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide them?””

“Because Michael threatened Vanessa.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that like it explains everything.””

“It doesn’t.””

For the first time, Claire looked directly at me.

“But it explains why I made the worst decisions of my life.””

I waited.

She continued.

“Michael told Vanessa he would destroy her if she told you.””

“Destroy her how?””

“He had money. Connections. He said he would make sure she never saw Noah again.””

I looked away.

“And you believed him.””

“I saw what he was capable of.””

“What did he do?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“He hurt people.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

She nodded slowly.

“Michael was involved in your father’s business years ago.””

I felt dizzy.

“My father died before I met you.””

“I know.””

“What does he have to do with this?””

Claire looked toward the window.

“Michael knew your family had secrets too.””

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone has secrets except me.””

She started crying.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I spent years thinking I was building a normal life.””

My voice cracked.

“But my entire marriage was built on things people decided I didn’t deserve to know.””

Claire whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to believe she meant it.

I wanted to forgive her.

But forgiveness required something I no longer had.

Trust.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*I found where Michael is hiding.*

Attached was an address.

I looked at Claire.

She saw the screen.

“Don’t go.””

“Why?””

“Because he wants you to.””

“And?””

She stepped closer.

“Because Michael doesn’t make mistakes.””

I stared at her.

“You know him better than anyone.””

Her face changed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I knew the man he pretended to be.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“Daniel, please.””

I stopped at the door.

Not because I was changing my mind.

Because I needed to ask one last thing.

“Was the baby really his?””

Claire looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

I walked outside.

The address Vanessa sent led me to an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city.

The kind of place nobody visited unless they had a reason.

I stepped inside.

“Michael?””

My voice echoed.

Nothing.

Then a light turned on.

A man stood at the end of the room.

Older than the pictures.

But unmistakable.

Alive.

He smiled.

“Daniel.””

I clenched my fists.

“You’ve been watching me.””

“Yes.””

“You threatened my family.””

He laughed softly.

“Your family?””

He looked around.

“Daniel, you still don’t understand.””

He stepped closer.

“Your family was never yours.””

My jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Michael smiled.

“It means Claire never chose you.””

He pulled out a folder.

“And Vanessa never told you the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

A birth record.

Not Noah’s.

Not the baby Claire carried.

Something else.

Michael looked at me.

“Ask your wife why she changed the name on the original record.””

My blood went cold.

Because at the bottom of the document was a name.

May you like

A name I recognized.

Mine.
