Chapter 7: The Truth About Emily’s Mother

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

I looked at Richard.

Then at Emily.

Then down at my son sleeping in my arms.

“The reason her mother died?”” I repeated.

Richard didn’t blink.

“Yes.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Her voice was shaking.

“Don’t tell him anything.””

Richard looked at her with a cold smile.

“You’ve spent years hiding the truth from everyone. Why stop now?””

I felt my anger rise.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Emily looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who used to laugh while cooking dinner.

The woman who cried when we bought our first house.

But behind her eyes was something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

“My mother didn’t die in an accident,” Emily whispered.

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“Emily.””

“No.””

She wiped away her tears.

“I’m done protecting you.””

I stared at her.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“My father was supposed to be in prison.””

Jason stepped closer.

“Richard covered everything up.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Jason’s jaw tightened.

“I know enough.””

I looked between them.

“Enough for what?””

Jason looked at me.

“Enough to know that Richard spent years controlling Emily’s life.””

Richard scoffed.

“Controlling?””

He looked at Emily.

“I gave you everything.””

Emily shook her head.

“You took everything.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Richard’s face darkened.

“You always were ungrateful.””

I stepped between him and Emily.

“Take one more step toward her, and this conversation is over.””

Richard looked at me.

Almost amused.

“You think you’re protecting her?””

“I know I am.””

He looked down at my son.

“No. You’re protecting a secret you don’t understand.””

I tightened my hold.

“What secret?””

Emily whispered:

“Daniel…”

But I needed to hear it.

Not from her fear.

Not from Richard’s manipulation.

From the truth.

Richard walked toward the window.

“Emily’s mother discovered something about me.””

“What?””

“She found out I had been hiding money from the family.””

Emily shook her head.

“That’s not why she died.””

Richard ignored her.

“She threatened to expose me.””

“And?””

His eyes hardened.

“And she paid the price.””

The room froze.

I stared at him.

“Are you admitting you killed her?””

Emily covered her mouth.

Richard smiled.

“No.””

His calmness was worse than anger.

“I’m saying some people create their own disasters.””

Jason moved forward.

“You’re sick.””

Richard looked at him.

“And you’re the man who ran away when things became difficult.””

Jason lowered his eyes.

Because it was true.

But only partially.

Richard turned back to me.

“Daniel, you think Emily betrayed you.””

I didn’t answer.

“But you don’t know the whole story.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell me.””

Richard smiled.

“Your wife wasn’t afraid of becoming a mother.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“She was afraid her child would reveal the truth.””

I looked down at my son.

“What truth?””

Richard leaned closer.

“That Emily’s mother left behind evidence.””

“What evidence?””

He looked directly at Emily.

“The proof that I wasn’t the only one responsible for what happened.””

Emily’s face changed.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“You thought you destroyed it.””

Emily went pale.

“Where did you find that?””

I looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Richard laughed.

“Of course she didn’t.””

He turned toward the door.

“She never knew the full truth.””

I watched him leave.

But before he stepped out, he stopped.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Ask your wife why she really chose you.””

May you like

The door closed.

And suddenly, the man who had just entered felt less dangerous than the question he left behind.
