Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Her Silence

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emily standing in our doorway.

Not crying.

Not afraid.

Just letting me leave.

The next morning, I sat beside my son’s hospital crib, watching his tiny chest rise and fall.

He looked peaceful.

Like the world hadn’t already betrayed him.

I reached through the side of the crib and held his little hand.

“I’m here,” I whispered.

“No matter what happens, I’m here.””

A nurse named Sarah walked in carrying a folder.

She had been kind to me since the night before. She was the only person who looked at me like I was a scared father instead of a problem.

“Your wife called,” she said.

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

Sarah looked uncomfortable.

“She asked if you were still there.””

“And?””

“She asked if you were planning to bring the baby home.””

I stared at her.

“What did you tell her?””

“That I couldn’t share information without your permission.””

I nodded slowly.

Then Sarah placed the folder down.

“There’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The number that texted you last night. I recognized it.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who was it?””

Sarah looked toward the hallway before answering.

“It belongs to someone named Claire.””

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Claire?””

Sarah took a breath.

“Your wife’s sister.””

I froze.

Emily had told me her sister moved overseas years ago.

“She doesn’t have a sister here.””

Sarah looked surprised.

“She told you that?””

I felt my hands go cold.

“What are you saying?””

Sarah pulled a chair closer.

“Mr. Carter, I don’t know your family situation. But Claire was listed as Emily’s emergency contact when she gave birth.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“Why would she hide her own sister from me?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

But I did know one thing.

Emily had been keeping secrets.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Emily.

*Emily: I’m coming to the hospital. We need to talk.*

I stared at the message.

Part of me wanted to see her.

Part of me wanted answers.

But another part of me remembered her words.

If you take that baby out of this house, don’t bother coming back.

When Emily arrived twenty minutes later, she looked different.

Her hair was messy. Her eyes were tired.

For a moment, I saw the woman I married.

Then she looked at our son.

And immediately looked away.

“Can we talk?”” she asked.

I stood up.

“Not until you tell me why you said you never wanted to be a mother.””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“You sent it.””

“No.””

“I have the message.””

Emily looked down.

“I was angry.””

“Angry enough to abandon your son?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t abandon him.””

“Then what do you call leaving me alone in the rain with a three-day-old baby?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, Emily looked ashamed.

Then she whispered:

“There’s something I never told you about my pregnancy.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

She looked at the baby.

Then at me.

May you like

And the next words destroyed the last bit of trust I had left.

“I wasn’t the only person who knew I was pregnant.””
