Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Betrayal

Nobody moved.

The darkness inside the old house felt alive.

I held my son tighter against my chest, feeling his tiny fingers curl around my shirt.

Behind me, Emily was frozen.

Jason stood between us and the hallway.

Then Richard stepped into the light.

And I saw the person standing beside him.

My stomach dropped.

“Mom?””

Emily’s voice cracked.

The woman standing next to Richard looked older, tired, and terrified.

But she was alive.

Emily took one step forward.

“No…”

Her mother looked at her.

Tears filled both of their eyes.

“Emily.””

The world seemed to stop.

I looked at Jason.

He looked just as shocked as I was.

“You said she died,” I whispered.

Emily didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Her entire life had just collapsed again.

Richard smiled.

“This is why you should have listened to me.””

Emily looked at him with pure disbelief.

“You told me she was dead.””

Her mother lowered her head.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily’s voice became louder.

“You let me believe my own mother was dead.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Because it was safer.””

“For who?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I looked at the woman who had been a ghost in Emily’s memories.

“You’re her mother?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why hide?””

Her eyes moved toward Richard.

“Because I was afraid.””

Jason laughed bitterly.

“Everyone is always afraid of him.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Be careful.””

“No,” Jason said.

His voice was different.

Stronger.

“I spent years being afraid of you.””

Richard looked at him.

“You ran away.””

Jason nodded.

“Yes.””

Then he looked at Emily.

“And I regret it every day.””

Emily looked away.

Her mother stepped closer.

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

Emily’s tears fell.

“Know what?””

Her mother took a deep breath.

“The truth about your father.””

Richard interrupted.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Her mother ignored him.

“He didn’t kill me.””

I felt confused.

“Then what happened?””

She looked at Richard.

“He tried.””

Silence.

Emily covered her mouth.

Her mother continued.

“I found out what he was doing. The money. The threats. The people he was controlling.””

Richard shook his head.

“She’s lying.””

Her mother looked at him.

“I recorded everything.””

My heart started beating faster.

The recording.

The thing Richard was afraid of.

“The recording is real?”” I asked.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Where is it?””

Her mother looked at my son.

And then at Emily.

“I hid it where Richard would never look.””

Richard’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Where?””

Her mother smiled sadly.

“With the only person I knew he would never suspect.””

Emily looked confused.

“Who?””

Her mother looked at me.

The room went silent.

I felt my blood run cold.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Your husband.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Years ago, before you married Emily, I met you.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

“You wouldn’t.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Emily’s mother continued.

“I saw your kindness. I saw how you treated people. I knew if anything happened to me, Emily needed someone like you.””

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

“I don’t understand.””

Her mother whispered:

“I left the recording with a lawyer.””

Jason frowned.

“Then why would it be with Daniel?””

“Because the lawyer was someone Richard controlled.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“And the backup?””

Her mother looked at Emily.

“The backup was hidden inside the one thing Richard could never take from you.””

Emily looked down at her son.

My heart stopped.

The baby.

No.

Not the baby.

The hospital bracelet.

The tiny bracelet placed around our son’s wrist after birth.

Emily touched her mouth.

“The bracelet?””

Her mother nodded.

“Inside it.””

Everyone went silent.

Then Richard moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He reached toward the crib bag.

Jason reacted immediately and grabbed his arm.

The two men struggled.

I stepped back, protecting my son.

Richard looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re carrying.””

I stared at him.

“And you have no idea who you’re dealing with.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

A crash came from the hallway.

And when the emergency lights flickered on…

The bracelet was gone.
