Chapter 14: The Last Secret

The house went dark.

Only the sound of rain remained.

I held my son close while Emily stood beside me.

For the first time, she didn’t look like someone trying to escape.

She looked like someone ready to fight.

Richard walked slowly into the room.

But this time, he wasn’t smiling.

He looked desperate.

“You don’t understand what you’re protecting.””

I stared at him.

“You keep saying that.””

I stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Richard looked at Emily.

“I tried to protect you.””

Emily laughed.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You tried to protect yourself.””

Something changed in Richard’s face.

Anger.

“You have no idea what your mother started.””

Emily’s mother stepped forward.

“You mean what I uncovered.””

Richard looked at her.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

“And you should have been stopped years ago.””

Richard ignored her.

His eyes moved toward my son.

“I need the record.””

I tightened my grip.

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“You think this is about revenge?””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

For the first time, his voice sounded honest.

“It’s about survival.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked exhausted.

“Your son’s record contains the truth about what happened twenty years ago.””

Emily frowned.

“What truth?””

Richard looked at her.

“The truth that your mother tried to bury.””

Her mother shook her head.

“You’re still lying.””

Richard looked at her.

“Am I?””

The confidence in his voice disappeared.

And that scared me.

Because maybe the truth was more complicated than we understood.

Claire stepped forward.

“The record is not about Richard.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“It’s about the person who created all of this.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Emily.

“Your grandfather.””

Emily froze.

“My grandfather?””

Claire nodded.

“Richard was never the beginning.””

The room became silent.

“He was just the person who continued it.””

Jason looked at Richard.

“You’re saying someone else controlled you?””

Richard didn’t answer.

But his silence was enough.

Emily stepped back.

“My whole family…”

Claire nodded.

“Was built on secrets.””

Richard suddenly moved toward the table.

Jason blocked him.

“No.””

Richard stopped.

Then he looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t respond.

“You think I’m your enemy.””

“Aren’t you?””

He looked down.

“I made terrible choices.””

Emily stared.

“That’s all you have to say?””

Richard looked at her.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I was trying to protect you from something worse.””

Nobody believed him.

But then he said something that made everyone stop.

“The person who ordered everything was the one who arranged your marriage.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“Daniel wasn’t chosen by accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Your first meeting with Emily wasn’t random.””

I felt the room spin.

“No.””

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel…”

Richard continued.

“Someone wanted you close to her.””

I looked at Emily.

All those memories.

The coffee shop.

The first date.

The wedding.

Everything.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the hallway.

And whispered:

“The person who knew your entire life before you met Emily.””

Nobody moved.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From a number saved years ago.

A number I hadn’t seen in a long time.

My father’s.

But my father had been dead for eight years.

May you like

The message contained only one sentence.

*I’m sorry, Daniel. I should have told you the truth before I died.*
