Chapter 11: The Recording That Exposed Everything

“Where is it?””

Richard’s voice echoed through the house.

Everyone searched.

The bracelet was missing.

Emily looked at her mother.

“You said it was hidden.””

“It was.””

“Then someone took it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew what that meant.

There was another person in the house.

Jason checked the hallway.

“Someone left.””

I looked toward the front door.

The rain outside had stopped.

But fresh footprints covered the mud.

Someone had been waiting.

Someone who knew exactly what to take.

Emily’s mother looked terrified.

“No.””

Emily grabbed her arm.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“There’s only one person who knew about the backup.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Who?””

Her mother whispered:

“My brother.””

I frowned.

“You have a brother?””

Emily looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

Her mother closed her eyes.

“He was the reason Richard became powerful.””

Jason’s face changed.

“Your uncle?””

She nodded.

“He helped Richard hide everything.””

I felt exhausted.

Every answer created another question.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Daniel.””

My grip tightened.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t need to know my name.””

I looked at Emily.

She recognized the voice.

Her face turned pale.

“It’s him.””

“Who?””

She whispered:

“My uncle.””

The man continued.

“You have something that belongs to my family.””

I looked at my son.

“What do you want?””

A quiet laugh.

“I want the recording.””

“You took the bracelet.””

“Yes.””

“Then why call me?””

“Because the bracelet was only part of it.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

The man paused.

“Richard always thought the recording was the important piece.””

Silence.

“But Emily’s mother was smarter than that.””

Emily stepped closer.

“What did my mother do?””

The voice answered:

“She split the truth into two parts.””

I looked at her mother.

She looked devastated.

“The recording,” the man continued, “proves what happened.””

Another pause.

“But the second piece proves why it happened.””

My mind raced.

“What second piece?””

The man laughed.

“Your son.””

Everyone froze.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“No.””

The man continued.

“The child carries the evidence.””

I felt anger rise.

“He’s a baby.””

“Yes.””

The voice became colder.

“And that’s why nobody will believe what you find.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Emily’s mother whispered:

“He’s lying.””

I looked at her.

“Is he?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“What aren’t you telling us?””

She looked at my son.

“When I discovered what Richard was hiding, I found out he wasn’t working alone.””

“With who?””

She looked at Emily.

“With the people who helped him create the lie about my death.””

Jason frowned.

“And the baby?””

Her mother stepped closer.

“When Emily was pregnant, Richard became desperate.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He discovered the child carried something connected to the past.””

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.””

Her mother nodded.

“I know.””

Then she reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this hidden for years.””

Emily stared.

“What is it?””

Her mother handed it to me.

“A letter.””

“From who?””

She looked at Emily.

“From your real father.””

The room went silent.

Emily froze.

“My real father?””

Her mother nodded.

“He wrote this before he disappeared.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

Only one sentence was written.

And the moment I read it…

I understood why Richard was terrified.

*Emily, if you ever have a child, remember this: Richard was never your greatest enemy.*
