Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew The Truth
Emily sat beside the hospital window, staring at the rain outside.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
The silence felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.
“Who else knew?”” I asked.
Emily squeezed her hands together.
“My sister.””
I remembered Sarah’s words.
Claire.
The name that suddenly appeared from nowhere.
“You told me she was gone.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I lied.””
The honesty almost hurt more than another lie would have.
“Why?””
She looked at me, and for the first time, I saw something beneath her anger.
Fear.
“I was afraid you would leave me.””
I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“So instead you hid an entire person from me?””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Emily looked toward our son.
“When I found out I was pregnant, Claire was the first person I called.””
“Why?””
“Because she had been through something similar.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked closer to the crib.
But she stopped before touching him.
“She warned me.””
“About what?””
Her voice became barely a whisper.
“She told me becoming a mother would destroy me.””
I stared at her.
“That’s what this is about?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No, it’s more complicated.””
“Everything with you is always more complicated.””
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
Emily flinched.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Is this Daniel Carter?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“My name is Claire.””
I looked at Emily.
Her face went pale.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was a long pause.
Then Claire said:
“Because your wife is not telling you the truth.””
Emily stood up.
“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””
I turned away from Emily.
“Tell me what happened.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“Before Emily gave birth, she made a decision.””
“What decision?””
Another pause.
Then Claire said the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“She was planning to give your baby away.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my son.
My little boy.
The child I had carried through the rain.
The child I had promised to protect.
“No,” I whispered.
Emily started crying.
“Daniel, please.””
I turned toward her.
“Is it true?””
She didn’t answer.
And that was answer enough.
Claire continued.
“She changed her mind at the last second. But after the birth, she started panicking again.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why?””
Claire’s voice lowered.
“Because Emily has been hiding something from you since the day you found out she was pregnant.””
I looked at my wife.
At the woman I thought I knew.
“Tell me.””
Claire took a breath.
“Your son was never the reason she was afraid.””
I felt my heart stop.
“Then what was?””
The line went quiet.

And when Claire finally answered, her words changed my entire understanding of my marriage.
“She was afraid you would find out who the baby’s real father was.””
