Chapter 13: The Record That Changed Everything

The shadow outside the window disappeared.

But nobody moved.

Not because we were safe.

Because we all understood something at the same time.

Richard wasn’t the only threat.

The secrets surrounding my son had been protected by too many people for too many years.

And every person who knew the truth had a reason to lie.

I looked at Claire.

“Start explaining.””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at Emily.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily’s face hardened.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Emily stepped closer.

“You knew everything. You knew I was scared. You knew Richard was threatening me. And you still let me believe I was alone.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

The words hit the room.

Because they were true.

Everyone had made choices for Emily.

Everyone had decided what she could handle.

And nobody asked what she wanted.

Claire looked at me.

“The birth record is the key.””

I held my son tighter.

“Why?””

“Because your son’s birth was registered differently.””

Emily frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Claire took a breath.

“When the hospital created the record, someone changed information before it became official.””

Jason looked confused.

“Changed what?””

“The identity of someone involved.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Emily.

“Her father.””

Silence.

Emily shook her head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

She reached into her bag.

Then pulled out an old photograph.

She handed it to Emily.

Emily stared at it.

Her hands started shaking.

It was a picture of her mother.

A younger Richard.

And another man standing beside them.

Emily looked at Claire.

“Who is he?””

Claire whispered:

“The man Richard erased.””

I stepped closer.

“Your real father?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

Claire nodded.

“That’s the problem.””

Jason looked at the picture.

“Richard wanted everyone to believe Emily’s father was dead.””

Claire nodded.

“Because if the truth came out, everything would collapse.””

I looked at the baby.

“So what does this have to do with my son?””

Claire looked at him sadly.

“Because Richard discovered something after Emily became pregnant.””

“What?””

“He discovered that the bloodline he spent years trying to erase was still alive.””

The words sounded impossible.

But the fear on everyone’s faces made them feel real.

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t understand.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Your mother wasn’t running from Richard because of money.””

“Then why?””

“Because she found out Richard wasn’t your biological father.””

Emily froze.

The room went silent.

“What?””

Claire looked down.

“Richard built his entire life around a lie.””

I looked at Emily.

“And your mother knew?””

“Yes.””

Emily’s face crumbled.

“My whole life…”

Claire nodded.

“She protected you from the truth because she thought knowing would put you in danger.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“And now?””

Claire looked at my son.

“Now Richard knows the truth continued.””

I looked toward the window.

“He thinks the baby proves it.””

Claire nodded.

“But there is one thing he doesn’t know.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The birth record was never changed.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Then what was changed?””

Claire whispered:

“The person listed as the father.””

Emily stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at her.

“Your husband’s name was never supposed to be there.””

The room became silent.

I felt numb.

All this time.

All these lies.

All these secrets.

And now there was another question.

Who was written on my son’s birth record?

Before anyone could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.

Jason turned.

“He’s here.””

The lights went out.

Emily grabbed my arm.

Claire whispered:

“Hide the baby.””

But before we could move…

A voice echoed through the house.

May you like

Richard.

“You’ve all made this much harder than it needed to be.””
