Chapter 9: The Grave That Was Never Closed
The words followed me everywhere.
Claire wasn’t the first woman Michael tried to bury.
I spent the entire night searching through old memories.
Every conversation.
Every strange moment.
Every time Michael had appeared exactly when I needed help.
He wasn’t helping.
He was positioning himself.
The next morning, Detective Collins arrived with new information.
“We found Victoria.””
“Where?””
“She’s willing to meet.””
I stared.
“Willing?””
Sarah nodded.
“She contacted us first.””
That made no sense.
People hiding crimes didn’t usually invite police conversations.
Unless they believed they were still in control.
We met Victoria in a quiet hotel lounge.
She looked exactly like I remembered.
Elegant.
Calm.
Perfectly composed.
The kind of person nobody would suspect.
She smiled when she saw me.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t sit.
“You knew Claire was investigating Michael.””
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.””
“And you helped him.””
She sighed.
“You think everything is simple.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“I think my wife almost died because someone wanted money.””
Victoria studied me.
Then smiled slightly.
“Emily told you everything?””
I froze.
“How do you know Emily told me?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Detective Collins leaned forward.
“Ms. Hale, you need to explain your involvement.””
Victoria looked at her.
“I didn’t kill anyone.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she turned back to me.
“But I know who did.””
My heart raced.
“Michael?””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
I frowned.
“Then who?””
She looked around the room.
Then lowered her voice.
“Michael was only following orders.””
The air disappeared.
“Whose orders?””
Victoria looked directly at me.
“Your father’s.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“My father died ten years ago.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“And that is exactly why everyone believed the story.””
I stared at her.
“What story?””
Victoria leaned closer.
“Your father had a second family.””
My hands went cold.
“What?””
“Michael knew.””
Detective Collins immediately wrote something down.
“Do you have proof?””
Victoria reached into her bag.
She placed an old photograph on the table.
A man.
My father.
Standing beside a young woman.
And a child.
I looked closer.
The child was around Michael’s age.
But it wasn’t Michael.
“Who is that?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Your father’s daughter.””
My breathing stopped.
“I don’t have a sister.””
Victoria’s expression didn’t change.
“You do.””
I stared at the photograph.
A hidden family.
A hidden daughter.
A hidden past.
Everything I knew was breaking apart.
Then Victoria said something worse.
“She is the reason Michael wanted Emily gone.””
“Why?””
“Because Emily discovered who she was.””
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Emily.
*Daniel, don’t trust Victoria. She’s lying.*
I looked up.
Victoria was watching me.
She smiled.
“You received a message.””
My blood froze.
“How did you know?””
Victoria leaned back.
“Because Daniel…”
She whispered:
“I’m not the person you should be afraid of.””
A second message arrived from Emily.
This time with a photo attached.
It showed Victoria leaving the hospital.
But behind her was someone else.
Someone standing in the shadows.
Someone I thought was dead.
May you like
The message contained only four words.
*Michael has a twin.*
