Chapter 2: The Man Who Didn’t Want Her Saved
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
But those minutes felt like hours.
The funeral staff finally opened the coffin after I threatened to call the police. Every person in the chapel watched as Emily was lifted out, barely conscious, barely breathing.
Her skin was cold.
Her lips were pale.
But she was alive.
The paramedics rushed her onto a stretcher.
I followed beside them.
“Emily, stay with me.””
Her eyes opened slightly.
She looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“I’m here.””
Her fingers weakly grabbed my hand.
“Don’t trust…”
Her voice disappeared.
“Trust who?”” I asked.
But she passed out.
The ambulance doors closed.
I stood outside the chapel watching the vehicle disappear into the Boston night.
My entire world had changed in less than an hour.
My wife was alive.
And someone tried to make sure she stayed buried.
The police arrived shortly after.
Detective Sarah Collins walked into the chapel and looked around.
“Mr. Carter, we need everyone to remain here.””
Michael immediately stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous. My brother is grieving.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Your sister-in-law was found alive inside a coffin. Right now, nobody leaves.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
I noticed.
A small reaction.
But enough.
The detective turned to me.
“Who knew about your wife’s condition?””
“Everyone close to her knew she was sick.””
“What kind of illness?””
“Emily had a heart condition.””
Sarah wrote something down.
“Was she expected to survive?””
“No.””
She looked up.
“What happened to her before death?””
I swallowed.
“She collapsed at home.””
“Who found her?””
I hesitated.
“Michael.””
The room became quiet.
Sarah looked toward my brother.
“You were the one who found her?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“About midnight.””
“And where was Mr. Carter?””
Michael looked at me.
“He was asleep.””
I felt something cold move through my chest.
I remembered that night.
I remembered waking up and finding Emily already gone.
I remembered Michael standing in my bedroom doorway, telling me not to touch anything.
At the time, I thought he was helping.
Now I wasn’t sure.
Later that night, I sat beside Emily’s hospital bed.
Machines beeped around us.
Her eyes opened slowly.
“Daniel?””
I immediately stood.
“I’m here.””
She looked terrified.
“Where am I?””
“The hospital.””
She tried to sit up.
“The funeral…”
I nodded.
“You scared everyone.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I wasn’t supposed to wake up.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
Emily looked toward the door.
She lowered her voice.
“Someone gave me something.””
My hands went cold.
“What?””
“I don’t know. I remember drinking tea before bed.””
“Who made it?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Michael.””
The room felt smaller.
“Are you sure?””
She nodded weakly.
“He came over that night.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I was dying.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought I was imagining things.””
I held her hand.
“Emily, tell me everything.””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
She squeezed my fingers.
“Before I lost consciousness, I heard Michael talking to someone.””
“Who?””
Emily looked terrified.
“She wasn’t alone.””
I leaned closer.
“Who was with him?””
Before she could answer, the hospital room door suddenly opened.
Michael stood there.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“I heard Emily was awake.””
Emily immediately stopped talking.

And I knew.
She recognized the person standing in the doorway.
