Chapter 5: The Second Coffin

I arrived at Michael’s apartment with my heart pounding.

The building was surrounded by police cars.

Neighbors stood outside whispering.

Something about seeing those flashing lights made everything feel real.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t a family argument.

My brother had a secret big enough to bring the police to his door.

Detective Collins met me downstairs.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“I need to know.””

She looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

She sighed.

“Come with me.””

Michael’s apartment looked nothing like the home I remembered.

Everything was organized.

Too organized.

The kind of clean that felt unnatural.

Detectives searched through cabinets, drawers, and files.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

Sarah walked toward a locked room at the end of the hallway.

“We found this.””

She unlocked the door.

Inside was a storage room.

And in the center was a wooden box.

Not a coffin.

But close enough.

My stomach turned.

“What is that?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And medical records.

My hands went cold.

“Those are…”

“Your wife’s records,” Sarah said.

I picked them up.

Hospital visits.

Medication lists.

Private notes.

Someone had been monitoring Emily.

For months.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A folder labeled:

*Emergency Burial Preparation.*

I stared.

“What is this?””

Sarah took the folder from me.

“We’re investigating.””

I opened another page.

There was a date.

The date was two weeks before Emily collapsed.

Two weeks before anyone knew she would die.

Someone had prepared for her death in advance.

Someone expected it.

A detective called from the other room.

“Detective Collins!””

Sarah walked away.

I followed.

The detective was standing beside a computer screen.

“We recovered deleted files.””

“What files?”” Sarah asked.

The detective turned the monitor.

A video appeared.

The timestamp was from the night Emily collapsed.

My breathing stopped.

The camera angle showed our house hallway.

Michael entered.

He looked around.

Then Emily appeared.

She was holding a cup of tea.

The video had no sound.

But I watched Michael take the cup.

And add something.

I felt sick.

Sarah paused the video.

“Daniel, we need you to prepare yourself.””

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

The video continued.

Michael followed Emily upstairs.

Then ten minutes later, he came back down.

Alone.

But he wasn’t carrying an empty cup.

He was carrying something else.

A small bottle.

Sarah looked at me.

“This proves he may have poisoned her.””

My hands shook.

“But why?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

Because both of us knew.

Money.

Power.

Control.

Then the detective opened another file.

“This one is strange.””

The screen changed.

A scanned document appeared.

It was a life insurance policy.

Emily’s.

I leaned closer.

The beneficiary section was visible.

My name was crossed out.

A new name had been added.

I felt numb.

“Who changed it?””

Sarah looked at the document.

“Your brother.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The room spun.

Michael wasn’t just trying to hide a crime.

He had planned one.

Then Sarah noticed something else.

“Wait.””

She zoomed in.

There was a signature.

But it wasn’t Michael’s.

Someone else had approved the change.

Someone with access.

Someone inside the family.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop looking for the truth, Daniel. Emily wasn’t the only one meant to disappear.*

I stared at the screen.

Sarah saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I slowly turned the phone toward her.

And before either of us could speak, another message arrived.

This time, there was a photo attached.

May you like

A photo of my house.

Taken from inside.
